British Airways To Expand In Eastern Europe

Thu Mar 16, 2006 8:22 pm

ATW Online today reports that British Airways will focus on eastern Europe and add Tirana, Varna, Izmir, Ankara, Rostov, Gdansk plus additional destinations in the Ukraine beyond Kiev.

While Tirana, Varna (both by BA from LGW, IIRC), Izmir, Ankara (both by GB from LGW) have been announced quite a while ago, Rostov, Gdansk plus the "additional destinations in the Ukraine" seem to be a new development.

A couple interesting cities there, such as Tirana and Rostov, that I wouldn't have guessed BA would be serving anytime soon. Good to see airlines expanding into Eastern Europe, as it's a fantastic place full of great opportunities for business and travel.

May I assume all routes will be served with 737's or A319/A320's?

Any chance of Odessa, or not enough Club traffic?

Quoting Vfw614 (Thread starter):
Ankara (both by GB from LGW)

Ankara is being served from Heathrow Terminal 4 by B|MED, using Airbus A320's, not from Gatwick by GB Airways.

Commencing on 26th March, the service will initially fly six times a week, which will rise to daily in July.

Izmir is being operated by BA mainline. It was announced ages ago and is already in the timetable. Where has the GB Airways rumour come from?? What are the plans for Gdansk and Rostov?? They used to serve Gdansk a few years ago didn't they??? When are they going to announce to schedules?

I assume BA is not considering coming back to LJU and/or ZAG for now...

OK, just for clarification: The source is ATW which did not give any details from where and by whom the routes will be operated. I remembered the announcement of ADB and ESB a couple of months ago, but got mixed up with the operating airline and the London gateway.

This is what has been already known:

Nothing on Gdansk and Rostov so far which are the only real news.

Not sure if BA did, but I know LOT flew LGW-GDN for a short while.

Gdansk already has 11 weekly flights to Luton with Wizz Air and daily to Stansted with Ryanair. Is there space for BA as well?
