Fri Mar 17, 2006 12:03 am

Today in FLight they report Ontario is getting ready for A380 ops. Who is really planning to fly to this airport???? seems such a waste of money.

I guess you are referring to KONT? Didnt UPS order the A380? or was that fedex. UPS has huge ops out of KONT.

Possibly an alternative landing airport for LAX? If LAX's runways were to shutdown, where would an A380 go?

For now, maybe one of the military bases down in SoCal that has a runway that can handle a plan of that size...???

Some how I think you are mistaking the A380 with the C-5 Galaxy... Although the A380 is a BIG aircraft, it is designed so that it can actually LAND in the majority of airports that handle regular to large commercial aircraft... With some smaller airports that have received it already, it can show you CLEARLY that the A380 can land in most metropolitan or international runways (again, even some airports who DO NOT receive any B747 service)... The main thing is that although it can land and depart from smaller airports, the service these airports have are limited and can't handle the A380 efficiently (terminals for example).

You're probably talking about Edwards AFB, right?

The C-5 Galaxy has already come to SJO a few times and never had any serious problems for takeoff. I don't think comparing the A380 to the C-5 is fair, we'd have to compare it with an aircraft like the AN-124 or AN-225 for a better picture of this.

Eh? Explain this one to me?

Surely the A380 is just a big passenger jet - ground loading forces less per bogie/wheel than the A330-300 surely?

What do you mean? If you're in doubt about a C-5 being capable of taking off from SJO...

And if you were talking about me bringing up the AN-225 and 124 into the mix, then it's to bring up the issue of the takeoff and the size, and in the case of the 225, since it's much bigger than the A380-800, maybe also a comparison as in thrust per weight ratio along with size and T/O requirements. I can't really explain it, so maybe some of you who know more than me could fill in the blanks.

I thought you saying that the A380 vs C5 FRED isnt a fair comparison, and that the A380 vs the An124 and 225 was a fairer one?

You guys lost me. What is the connection between a C-5 taking off from SJO and a A380 taking off from Ontario?

The AN-125 and 225 go to ONT all of the time. The only place that really couldn't take the A380 would be the terminal area.
Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.

5X has confirmed their order of A380s and does plan to fly them into ONT, beginning in 2009. This runway restructuring now enables them to operate it scheduled. Plus, I anticipate that there will many an occasion where ONT's runway will need to handle a diverted A380 from LAX...
