A380: MSN012 Is Out Of The Hangar

Fri Mar 17, 2006 5:00 pm

MSN012 is now out of the hangar and has been photographed by FFAS, being towed by a TBL.

http://www.planepictures.net/netshow.php?id=460142

I have a question, why has MSN012 got a gold tail, when it is going to SIA.

Good colour also, can#t they do a gold A380. Big grin

Have any of you who pay attention to this stuff noticed any physical alterations or changes to the aircraft from 001-012. Just curious with all the wing problems and other if any physical alterations are noticeable

Excuse what may be a dumb question but does this mean this is the 12th A380 made? Do the serial numbers work sequentially?

Just a guess: it's the basis for a special colour scheme SIA are putting on an A380 for promotional purposes? It certainly looks like 'their' shade of gold.

I dare to guess that the tail was painted in some kind of primer. I'm still waiting to finally see the first GP powered A380 though.  Silly

****

There have been numerous problems with this aircraft. Nothing that I would view as a huge problem, but endless delays, overweight, weaker than expected wing, and so on.

My comment was more meant to be read as wing problems etc. Anyways, point is, are their any visible changes

The A380 tails are normally white or in the Airbus standard primer or the Airline colours.

I don't know if you've had your winglets installed or not as I don't have any pictures of you to confirm, but no, this A380 is lacking them.

Perhaps there's a new livery or special livery in the pipeline as MSN003 (F-WWSA) and MSN006 (F-WWSC) rolled-out with "traditional" (albeit slightly different) SQ tails:

whereas MSN012 (F-WWSI) seems to have a "golden" tail:

- 6-9 months delay is not endless.
- "Overweight" ? weight savings plans are always part of the development of any aircraft.
- "Weaker than expected wing"... : more a PR issue
- "and so on" : like what ?

Just for the record, according to Airbus' vice-president engineering, Alain Garcia, there is a direct connection between the weight problem and the wing problem:-

"Garcia says that the FEM calculations had already established that the A380’s wing had “no margin at ultimate load. We had a weight saving programme and ‘played the game’ to achieve ultimate load.”

Could it be paper or that decal type material they laser cut and apply then peal off ? I thought the tail was painted and balanced before installation ?

Understand SQ wanted a specific MSN sequence which was "lucky", maybe the MSN order is not the production order.

IIRC, the order are as follows: MSN 001, 004, 002, 007, 009, 003, 005, 006, 008. These are the order that they leave the hangar, and 001 will be retained by Airbus. I do remember about a thread here about the MSN order..

So as SQ are launch customer they get the first one but do they get all their order first then QF, EK etc etc or do the airlines determine the delivery order by the dates/number they request/order?

Interesting development. I saw this video about the production of the big boy. The large parts like wings an fuselage sections are assembled in one building and the thing looks like this when it gets to another building where they put on the engines and other missing parts. Than it is being towed to the painting building.

The tail is indeed confusing. I think I saw a tail coming out of a Beluge, already painted. Why is this one not painted?

Maybe it is simply a primer-coat/under-coat?

Having done some painting, its always a case of light colours first, followed by dark colours. Wouldn't it then be a simple case of masking off the SIA logo and painting the darker blue and orange stripe over the lighter gold colour?

Why have you concluded the tail isn't painted? Aren't at least the rudders generally painted before final assembly, because of "balancing issues?"

That could be. The colour looks somewhat like the bird in the SQ logo.

Yes, that's what I meant. And it is "Beluga", not what I wrote.

I haven't. It's obviously painted gold. All I am pondering is that, instead of a new colour scheme, it might simply be that Airbus/SQ might be experimenting with a slightly different procedure for painting the aircraft. My thought was that the tail's paint job may only be partially completed.

I think it's painted because the rudder is the same color as the rest of the tail fin. At a minimum, the rudder is always painted before the aircraft is assembled, otherwise the rudder would have to be re-balanced if it were painted after final assembly?

Trivial question, but why do they go to the trouble of wrapping the engine pylons and covering the doors but leave other gaps around the wings and tail open?
