Airlines Operating Business Jets

Mon Mar 20, 2006 6:00 am

Hi
sorry if this topic has already been discussed, but...

I was wondering why airlines don't operate business jets? Could they configure the biz jets for an economy seating configuration? Or, would this idea simply not be cost effective them?

I think a couple of airlines, such as Qatar Airways Saudi Arabian Airlines operate a few business jets. Are these just for the company executives, or are they run just like a charter operation such as Netjets, etc, or do they operate on scheduled routes?

When DL bought Comair, they also got Comair's business jet charter operation, and is now known as Delta AirElite. They have some a/c they own/lease and they also offer services via FlexJet as well. The costs of operating business jets is rather high (And the CRJ family of a/c are derived from the Challenger 600 series, and as shown by Independence Air, are not very profitable when flown independently of an airline partner), so an airline would have to charge a premium price for such flights, and with such operations as NetJets and FlexJet, the market is already well filled (which is part of the reason why UA's Avolar project was canned).

Enterprise Airlines operated a fleet of Cessna Citation IIs to cities in the Upper Midwest, such as Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Baltimore, and others. They were in operation in late 80s, I believe. I can't find their schedule in my collection right now.

Aerolineas Argentinas has an executive jet. Although I'm not 100% sure i believe the aircraft involved is LV-JTD (B732).
Here's the link to the AR website showing the executive jet services and photos.
