Why New Delta Paint So Soon?

Mon Mar 20, 2006 4:45 pm

Anyone know why Delta switched their paint so fast? They were, at one point, one of the only companies with three schemes in the air at once...

Upper Management changes.

Basically, new management decides tehy want to change the corporate image... they institute new paint job as part of that.

Then, that group gets replaced, new group hates the scheme the previous management instituted, they get a new one designed. New one starts going on the planes before previous one is completely gone.

No.

Well, ship 102, the Spirit of Delta, was recently repainted in it's original livery(widget scheme with special Spirit of Delta titles and markings). This was however after it's retirement from passenger service and prior to it's farewell tour of the domestic system.

There are still aircraft around though with the "new old colours (1997-2000)" if you search Delta Airlines pictures, but I guess about 80% is repainted now.
Delta was not the only one.
BA introduced the world tails but by the time they scrapped the idea 3 years later there were still aircraft in the Landor scheme.
Some US Airways Express commuters like Beech 1900s are still flying in the pre 1997 colors when US Airways got there newest scheme last year.
Aeroflot had about 4 different schemes, one for the A-310s, one on the Boeings and one (with variations) on the Soviet types. Only the newest scheme, the nice silver one, is adopted fleetwide and seen on Il-96s, Tu-134s and 154s, A-320s and 767s.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Actually 4, if you include Song  Wink . And as has been said, the changes were made to satisfy the egos of the CEOs, and that even goes for Grinstein.
Ron Allen started the 1997 livery which still was pretty much DL, particularly thanks to the familiar cheatline.
Leo Mullin went with the Eurowhite Deltaflot/Wavy Gravy with the modified widget.
And yes, even Grinstein had a livery change, namely bringing back the original, angled Widget. Not as obvious to John Doe and not as costly as RA's and LM's changes, but still a change  Silly .

OT: I still hope that once DL emerges from CH11, they will do so with another new livery, and bring the good old Widget scheme back.
