Malaysia Airlines Axes MAN, VIE, AMD, CCU, PDG...

Mon Mar 20, 2006 8:39 pm

Malaysia Airlines will drop the following destinations over the next threee months:

Manchester, UK | Ahmedabad, India | Kolkata, India | Xi'an, China | Vienna, Austria | Padang, Indonesia

The airline will downgrade KUL - Chengdu, China to an A332.
The airline will upgrade KUL - Kunming, ??? to an A333.

Frequency reductions on flights to and from:
BKI - PVG | PEN - SIN | KUL - Sandakan, ??? | KUL - NGO | KUL - FRA | KUL - AKL. Reductions will be in stages.

And there are some route changes all going into KUL instead of other Malaysian Airports.

MAN and VIE are both still in their online schedules

I wonder "if" and when they will do it.

Its a shame about MAN but it just leaves the door open for Thai to start a BKK flight

Absolute shame that MAN flights will be scrapped. I suppose EK haven't made things easier on the MAN-Asia/Oz market.

Good to see that CAI, BEY and DXB have 'survived' the first set of cutbacks.

On a side note, MH's website states their B772s are fitted with F class, however when checking amadeus on the KUL-CAI route it only shows C and Y. Anyone know why?

What will they do with the surplus aircraft - get rid of some of the B747's?

Dropping MAN won't be popular here in the North West of England - how I'm I going to go on holiday now...?

The MAN slack can be taken up by Emirates (upgrading evening flight to 77W), Singapore Airlines (rumoured to be upping to Daily nonstop 773ERs), Etihad (starting daily A332 flights), Qatar (increasing to daily A330s) etc

Emirates - I flew them to AKL at Christmas - the FA's on the MAN-DXB and DXB-MAN were awful (just plain rude!) but the FA's on the DXB-MEL-AKL and SYD-DXB A345's were good. MH and SQ are always good so I guess it's SQ now.

I suppose Singapore Airlines now has a near monopoly MAN - SE Asia!

This is a sad blow however for Manchester Airports Group.

If they close these routes, then it not going to be easy to expand when the A380 arrives.

SQ now has a total monopoly on MAN - SE Asia! CX is postponed until later this year, and TG are concentrating on regional services just for the time-being, and not MAN and TXL just yet.

Every cloud has a silver lining.......

I am surprised that EZE-KUL via South Africa was spared. MH must be turning a profit in that route, because their website always quotes stratospheric fares for those flights.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Despite their 777s still fitted with PCL, they only sell seats on JCL. If you are lucky, you purchase a JCL ticket and get to sit all the way in seat 1A, in the wide comfort of a PCL seat. The reconfiguration will take a while...

Will there be more cuts announced in the coming weeks or months?

Going by the number of routes they claimed to be unprofitable, these cuts do not seem drastic enough. What are they going to do with EZE route?

nopes...Emirates has a sizeable market share of pax heading ONE STOP via DXB to the Far East and Australia from MAN.

Its faster flying EK via DXB to PVG, KIX, HKG, BKK than it is on SQ!!!

The problem is that MH are not allowed to use Turboprops at KUL, because the airport has a jet only policy.

And MH operate F-50`s and DHC-6 planes from the other airports, but Malaysia is a pretty small country so flights should be aimed more from their HUB to other destinations in Asian and worldwide.

Just my Opinion

No - Riau Airlines operates a F50 to Sumatra from KUL. It is however the only prop operator at the airport.

No - MH only operates F50s and DHC6s in Borneo and not on the Peninsula. I disagree that Malaysia is a pretty small country - given the fact that it takes and 1.75hrs to fly to Kuching and over 2.5hrs to fly to Kota Kinabalu from KUL.

Interesting to see that Kota Kinablulu has been dropped, similar to AO a few months back. There is just no market for direct flights to this destination.

Its very funny for MH to cut down SIN/PEN flights to 7x B734 services while SQ manages to sustain 21X B777 services on the same route.

sadly I have to agree - even though Sabah is a fantastic adventure destination it is too low yield because it is all cheapskates like me who go there

I hope not. Long haul budget airlines is one thing the industry doesnt need.
Anyone remember that Backpackers express plan ?

London to Melbourne in a three deck 747 painted with beer can engines, big smiling face stopping at every alehouse between here and india.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

I do remember as Backpackers Express intended to serve MAN. Air Asia might also be minded to reinstate the service - one of their aircraft promotes Manchester United, so there is a link of sorts. I have no absolutely no desire to fly to anywhere from London, so the flight I took from MAN to KUL, SIN and Bali a couple of years ago with MH will be my last with them.

Aye, but I have a feeling an A320 might struggle to do MAN-KUL without stopping at least 4 times  Wink
