BRA To Fly CGN-GIG From October 2006

Tue Mar 21, 2006 3:17 am

According to the homepage of CGN, it is confirmed now that BRA will start charter services to GIG from CGN, beginning at October 2006. To me that is very surprising, but good news nevertheless. The airplane will be a 767.

That's nice! Only twice weekly, sundays and wednesdays, but still nice!

Yes. But now they are also a regular-scheduled LCC, however not internationally.

Nice to have you back, Eric.

They fly charters to LIS and MAD, and also they get 10 weekly frequencies to MAD and 7 to LIS as a regular airline.
BRA will receive soon 1 more 767-300ER and 1 or 2 757-200's. Their intention is to fly Northeast-LIS/MAD.

A surprise to me... but the German investment in Rio is growing. This week three different German companies change their HQ from São Paulo to Rio and not to forget Thyssen Krupp, which confirmed a major investment of up to US$ 1,5 billion.

Not only for you. Until some years ago, CGN hardly ever saw intercontinental traffic (there was some in the 70s, but since the 90s nothing is left), and especially not from foreign charter airlines, who usually have problems in the German market. It surprises me a lot that they fly from CGN and not DUS, just like Continental chose CGN for a CGN-EWR routing. Now if Oasis comes, as well, we would have three long distance routes in CGN, quite a sensation.

The runway is more than long enough, it is one of the longest in Germany, with 3800 metres, and the airport is open 24hours.

I'm not so surprised that CGN gets more intercontinental traffic. AFAIK the management of CGN tries very hard to get intercontinental traffic to CGN. There were rumors about US and Asian LCC's coming to CGN (one of the winners of this move would be Germanwings, who has a basis in CGN). A Brasilian LCC is thus not exactly what one would expect, but it's in line with the general strategy in CGN.
