Busiest Airports By Size

Tue Mar 21, 2006 6:44 am

I've had this theory for a while that while there are many busy airports in this world, it would be interesting to qualify their business by their size.

Now, there are a few ways to do this:

1) Square mileage / acres the airport sits on
2) Number and type of runways
3) Terminal square footage
4) Number of gates

and a load of other variables, obviously.

Personally, I think the most interesting is square mileage/acreage.

So -- what is the busiest airport per acre in the world? More people and/or flights per acre than any other.

I ran the analysis on the 3 major NY-area airports and here is what I got for full-year 2005:

LGA: 38K pax per acre; 596 flights per acre
JFK: 8K pax per acre; 71 flights per acre
EWR: 16K pax per acre; 215 flights per acre

HUGE discrepancy between the 3 airports. JFK handles the most passengers, but the fewest flights, but sits on almost 2.5x the acreage of EWR, which sits on 3x the acreage of LGA!!!

Just to show another "small" busy airport -- here's DCA's 2005 figures:
24K pax per acre; 379 flights per acre (counting the 733 above-ground acres only)

Or to show ATL, the worlds business in passenger volume:
19K pax per acre; 209 flights per acre

Still, nobody even comes close to LGA! Can anyone find an airport that does?
What about the LEAST busy per acre?

Quoting Dartland (Thread starter):
1) Square mileage / acres the airport sits on

That would be DMM, which opened in 1999. Before that, most thought it was RUH, but it was actually YMX

Quoting Dartland (Thread starter):
2) Number and type of runways

DFW has 7 runways

Quoting Dartland (Thread starter):
3) Terminal square footage

HKG

BTW, LAX does 18K PAX per acre

The "World's Busiest Square Mile"--Chicago Midway--does 29k pax/acre and 450 flights/acre.

Still can't beat LGA.

Gotta be DEN, built to be the super-hub that never was. Couldn't keep CO and couldn't lure DL from SLC as was originally planned. 53 square miles, 36million PAX per year.

DEN actually is the world's largest airport by land coverage... DEN is somewhat similar in appearance to that of ATL... Several concourses in a linear fashion.

I take it that there is tons of unused space at DEN... Also sounds a bit like PIT, although that was at one point the super hub for US.

17 flights per acre

Just for the hell of it... PIT has 4 runways, with one of them being one of the longest in the country at roughly 2.25 miles in length... The overall size of land that the airport sits on is considerably larger than that of downtown's central business district... I am sure that PIT is put to certain shame by other fields out there like DFW, DEN, ATL, ORD, JFK, IAH, LAX, BOS, and IAD...

Singapore doesn't make it that high, surprisingly. - 8K passengers/acre, and 50 flights per acre.

Haneda I would guess ranks high, but I cannot find its area.

On an old website I found mention of Kai Tak having been 380 acres, and handling 28 million passengers. That figures to 73.6K pax per acre!

No it isn't, it is fourth. DMM, YMX and RUH are all larger

Actually, DEN did 43,387,513 passengers last year.

I can't find any information on it's size, but I'd imagine SEA's passengers per acre number is quite high...

Curse you inaccurate sites!!!  banghead  Although, I should have said that it was the largest in the USA in that regard. That's probably what I meant to say but failed to do so...

Just for kicks.

SEA - 11.7K pax per acre
136 flights per acre

SNA 19.2K pax per acre
698 (!!) flights per acre

And my own spacious PDX: 4.6K pax per acre
87 flights per acre

Wow -- crazy. But if you look at commerical travel only, that drops to only 206 flights per acre. Over 60% of those movements are general aviation. (to be fair, all the other figures are total also, but SNA clearly has a much higher general aviation percentage)

Theres a particular aviation mag I read (name slips me right now) and in one of the issues it had statistics on busiest Airports...and LGA was right up there. I leave out of LGA ALL the time...and to really think about it, they receive/depart a tremendous amount of flights daily for it to be such a "small" airport !

3) Terminal square footage

HKG

I guess that's wrong, depending on how we see it.

HKG is indeed the world's largest terminal building. However, if the question is about a whole terminal complex (i.e. LHR's T1+T2+T3+T4+T5 or MAD's T1+T2+T3+T4) then there are airports which are way bigger than HKG in terms of terminal square footage.
