Belfast City Airport is to be renamed in honour of George Best, it has been announced.

A ceremony at the east Belfast airport is planned for 22 May, with the new signage being unveiled on what would have been his 60th birthday.

I am sorry but it is a sign of the times that they now name an airport after a footballer, who was a womaniser, heavy drinker and, even when he was given a second chance, still failed to curb his drinking?
Whatever next? Manchester Airport being named after a contestant who took part in Big Brother?

I know I am going to be flamed for this, but I fail to see why George Best should have the honour when there are other more deserving people out there who have done far more than he has.

This is a stupid decision hastily rushed into. In time the management will regret this. Belfast City Airport is exactly what it say is it - the airport closest to the city. George Best is not a name particuarily well known outside of footballing circles. This decision is on a par with the infamous Campari/Luton Airport television advertising campaign which took the airport years to recover from.

There are other and better Northern Ireland citizens who could have been honoured. Mary Peters, the Olympic Gold Champion who has worked ceaselessly since for the benefit of young people and sport. Or Professor Frank Partridge whose development of the portable defibrillator has saved millions of lives.

A crass commercial decision.

Hi

I don't think that it is a great idea to name the airport after George Best. However Northern Ireland is not a large country so there are few famous people from there.

Sorry to go off track, but this reminds of something.
Does anyone remember when following the death of the Princess of Wales there was talk of renaming Heathrow to 'Diana Princess of Wales Airport' or something to that effect?
I remember many people supported it, but obviously it never happened. Anyone know why?

Because it was in many ways a knee jerk reaction that was short-termist. And I think it was too much for some people who found the reaction to Diana's death too much. Not ashamed to admit I was one of those puzzled by it all.

Before the binge drinking got the better of George Best's life, he was a fantastic footballer. He was an inspiration to many people (not just in the North). He rose to stardom as the North was beginning to enter a very depressing time in its history - many people looked to best and his talent as a way to escape the torment of the growing troubles.

I agree that there are many other citizens of Northern Ireland who deserve credit for their sporting/ political achievements - Mary Peters being an example.

Naming an airport after a politician - In Northern Ireland - may prove difficult ( in the present state of things)

It was the the new Tory leader, William Hague, who suggested LHR be re-named 'Princess Diana Airport'.
To universal derision-even in that media frenzy period of 1997.

This idea for BFS is stupid.
Bottom line, a wife beating drunk, who pissed away (literally) a second chance.
So what that he was a great footballer-for the last time over 30 years ago.
Bollocks to that, even if Best had controlled himself, had a longer, better career, it still would be bubble headed to name an airport after him, re-name Old Trafford after him, more appropriate.

I feel the same about LPL becoming John Lennon Airport.
No one doubts his immense contribution to popular music, but that is all it was.
Whilst we can all know of flaws in the very famous, the age we live in means these are amplified.

I also don't get the mania for naming airports in the US after people, JFK-fair enough-whatever you thought of him, his death was a national trauma.
(My own take on him, his personal life apart-I shudder to think of some of his contempories as President during the Cuban Missile Crisis, quite a few subsequent Presidents too).

France has CDG-now there was a divisive figure-but you cannot doubt his role as a national figure during and after WW2.

But beyond maybe one major airport named after a major historical fiqure per nation, it's going to get into a political contest-note Reagan and George Bush airports.
Plus other bubble headed stuff like naming an airport after John Wayne-a fantasy figure, famous for pretending in the form of acting!

In no way are actors, footballers, singer/songwriters, major historic figures.
A sign of our trivia obsessed, bubble headed age.

Just think of the marketing opportunties, regardless of any passenger/trade survey: the Best airport in the UK (and I don't think the Advertising Standards Authority or any other watchdog could do anything about it!)

Now maybe London customs and airline personnel will stop pissing (or whizzing as I believe you British chaps say) in their knickers when they see "Belfast" on your ticket or boarding pass.

no worse (but not right either) than naming an airport after a c-movie actor who had a dominering wife who made all his discisions, or after a gun crazy texan oil businessman who couldn't finish what he started or a mediocre song writer who was constantly stoned.

All in all naming airports/buildings after people is wrong, because we will never be able to agree on who has a name unblemished enough not to invoke oposition.

Ok before you get to read my thoughts on this I must point out that I have lived near the airport in East Belfast all my live and I work in the Cregagh area of East Belfast, the area where George Best grew up.

My thought (I may be wrong) is that its a PR stunt by the airport and a very good one at that. Over the last few years the local community including local politicians in East Belfast have been opposed to larger aircraft and more flights in and out of the airport. Yet when this was announced the same community and politicians welcomed the idea.

The reason behind this (again I may be wrong) is the airport are getting ready to ask the government to look at relaxing flight movements at the airport later this year/early next year. At the minute no flight departures/arrivals before 7.00am and no flight departures/arrivals after 9.30pm and they (the airport) would like public support for increased opening hours.

That's my thought on it. As you can tell I don't think it's a great idea. Maybe naming our new national stadium after him might have been a more fitting tribute.

If I have upset anyone sorry but I am entitled to my opinion and you yours I hope you will understand.

I have to be honest and say that I am completely overcome with indifference on the subject about what it's called, however, I do believe all the high and mighty, morally superior, holier than thou comments above are a little over the top.

At the end of the day, the guy was a popular figure in his heyday due to his amazing sporting talent. He was born and grew up in the area in which BHD finds itself. The people of NI are very proud his achievements during that time both as a Man Utd and NI player.

Possibly, however as the new stadium will be for the playing of the football, rugby and GAA, it was felt inappropriate to name it after a footballer, as football only encompasses one aspect of the stadium's proposed use.

I'll agree that he was perhaps not the most "upstanding" character in his personal life, especially in later years, but let's remember the good bits, allow his family to be proud of their son and what he has achieved and also remember that BHD has undergone massive changes in recent years and still continues to do so. A renaming of the airport probably also suits the business ideals of Ferrovial as part of the ongoing development of the airport.

What I mean is that the couple of times I have flown from BHD and connected in London to a flight back to the States, I have gotten all sorts of weird reactions from airline agents, security personnel and the like.

The last time I went, I connected from FlyBE to Delta at LGW. I was already running late due to snow delays in Belfast and was hot-footing it to make my connection to CVG. Every time I showed my boarding pass to somebody, I got grilled to the n-th degree. When I reached the gate, the contracted DL agent almost paniced when he saw my ticket. He immediately called over a supervisor, who eventually called another superviser. My carry-on bags practically got dumped out to be search, I was asked question after question about what I was doing in Belfast and who I spent time with. They reprinted my through boarding passes on DL cardstock and even confiscated my FlyBE BHD-LGW boarding pass (they wouldn't tell me why when I asked.) I have received similar, though less extreme, reactions other times as well.

(My tickets were always booked well in advance, roundtrip, paid for with credit cards, etc., so I know it wasn't that sort of stuff that flagged me.)

Any truth in the rumour that those will be renamed as well:

Gazza Newcastle International Airport
Matti Nykaenen Helsinki International
OJ Simpson LAX International

and they are bound to form the international "ANAFSKFBUTM Alliance" ("Airports Named After Famous Sportsmen Known For Beating Up The Missus") ?

I here they gonna paint the number 7 on the runway whit with a red trim on the edge, (he wore the number 7)

The red will only be noticable close up, and wouldn't stand out to approaching aircraft.

I think this is way OTT.

Yes he was a Great Footballer, but he to rename the airport....he left the city as quick as he could....

Mr Matti Nykaenen is going back to prison again, this would be a good way to cheer him up

Maybe HEL could be NOKIA International Airport, as NOKIA must be the biggest single business client there...no no, I hope it remains Helsinki-Vantaa, or Helsingfors-Vanda in Swedish, in the second official language.
Vantaa is a satellite city north of Helsinki.

More serious news: there are plans to rename Tallinn airport to Lennart Meri International, after a former president.

I am another local living near BHD. I think this is a stupid idea, simply because I think it sounds stupid! Im sure they could have come up with a better idea such as a statue, or a memorial garden or something.

In the same way that i think Liverpool John Lennon Airport sounds a bit ridiculous, so does Belfast Geroge Best Airport. It just doesnt sound good in my opinion. And i dont think the majority of people will even call it by name. Will continue to be referred to as "The City"  Smile
