Pics: MD90s Wth Only 2 Yrs Service Being Scrapped!

Wed Mar 22, 2006 7:25 am

According to airlinerlist.com, three former Air Aruba MD90s: P4-MDF, P4-MDG, P4-MDH, are to be scrapped! These birds were delivered new in November 1998 to Air Aruba (through a Taiwanese leasing company) and withdrawn from use when that carrier ceased ops in October of 2000. These were supposed to be re-leased to Pro-Air, and even painted in their colors, but they failed to re-start after 9/11 and never took delivery of the planes. The Taiwanese leasing company hasn't been able to lease them since, so they've sat at Marana for over five years now. Here they are in storage:

Finally, these were recently sold to Source One Spares to be broken up. Here's some pics of P4MDH being scrapped, with the others soon to follow:

That Taiwanese leasing company must be really taking it on the chin on these planes! Getting only two years worth of leasing money means 100s of millions were lost on these birds! Wonder if the leasing company went bankrupt...does anybody know their name?

These birds are only 7 years old with less than two years of flight time on them. A similar situation happened with 5 Reno Air MD90s with only a few year's use on them which have been sitting in Marana since early 2001. This all seems like such a waste.

The ex Reno birds are in use with Lion of Indonesia, as for these poor birds, with Hello, Blue 1, Nordic Leisure and others, I can't imagine they could not find a home, unless the leasing company was asking WAY too much for them!!

Hi IslandHopperCO,

I remember that not long ago a similar topic was discussed here. So I did a search, and it appears that you started it with quit the same title. Not wanting to seem rude, my next question was: Is it really worth to start an all new post on the same topic? I may be wrong, but seemed strange to me.

Cheers.

Wow, I remember seeing those birds being delivered when I worked at Long Beach.

Wow, this is really sad  Sad

I haven't been on a MD90 yet, but I am looking forward to flying on one next month with Iceland Express, who recently took one into service. They will be receiving two more in April and May - all operated by Hello in Switzerland.

This seems really strange - scrapping aircrafts that are virtually new!!  Wow!

... and many noisy DC-9s and early MD80s keep flying. Thats odd.

These poor MD90s must hold a record for being the youngest airliners ever getting the axe.

So sad to see the beautiful MD-90 being scrapped.... If only MDC got the change to develop the bird even more, it could have been a success.  Smile

The MD-80 series was a success, wasn't it? There are a lot still flying.

I wonder how much the parts brought? They were probably easy to unload. It is doubtful the leasing company lost all that much.

Luckily, yes. But they did a cheap upgrade from the MD-80 to the MD-90. It lacked the Transcontinental range.

In Norway we where fortunate to have allot of DC-9's MD-80's and MD-90's. The DC-9 is gone, and all SAS MD-80/90 is located in Denmark. So for me we don't get to see that many MD-80/90 anymore.

I would have posted the new pics of the planes being scrapped on the old thread, but once a thread is archived you can't post to it. So I started a new one because of the new pics.

>These poor MD90s must hold a record for being the youngest airliners ever getting the axe.

There are some precidents in airplane scrapping history. Continental scrapped five of their barely 10-year-old Boeing 720s (delivered 1965, scrapped 1975). Nigeria Airways scrapped their four new-built 1984 A310s when they were anywhere from four to ten years old. Apparently they had no money for spare parts, so they kept parting them out until none of them were serviceable any more. The one in the first pic was parted out in 1988, and the second pic is of the shells still sitting in Lagos. Crazy stuff.

Yes, Delta flies them. Mainly out of SLC, but you can find them elsewhere every now and then. I recently flew one DFW-ATL.

Does anybody else see the wingletted-727 in the right-hand photo? It also has nothing covering its engine inlets.

Hwai Hsing Leasing owned them.

They had several opportunities to lease them but, at the end decided to sell rather then lease. The market would only allow a max of $165K a month or so at the time. So they sold. Had they held them a few more months they might have gotten $200-215K a month as there was a surge in the remaining MD90s.

The company that purchased them got their money back on the engines alone with the high prices of the IAE 2527Ds

Does anyone know who the 727 in the foreground of the first airplane belongs to? The one with the spade on the tail and its airstairs down? I've never seen a livery like that, but its a pretty neat one.

IIRC, that was ACE, AllCanada Express, a cargo operator from Canada that (again, IIRC) recently (2005?) ceased operations. They had a small number of 727s, something like 4 or 5.

Please, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong.

Here are some amazing pictures of them in the scrapping process. All three MD90s are in the process of being scrapped. One of them is already on its belly and cut in two! Sad stuff:

>Hwai Hsing Leasing owned them.

Thanks for the info. In fact, wasn't Ghana Airlines going to lease these to restart services? I noticed your country of origin. Hwai Hsing still lost a ton of money on these things I'm sure.

Anyone know why YX wasn't intrested, as these could of been an alternative to the B717's or the large influx of them anyway.

GIA was specifically looking at these aircraft and wanted to lease them.

Hwai Hsing decided to get what cash they could and write off the loss due to the poor MD90 market at the time.

Since then the MD90 market took off and lease prices went up and not down.

Didn't Saudia take a bunch of brand new MD90s that were only for parts use and would never fly again? Seem to recall reading something about that a number of years ago?

I remember those 3 Pro-Air MD-90's. On Feb 12, 2002, a buddy and I had taken off in his BE58 from Scottsdale (SDL) on our way back to Reid-Hillview (RHV) and decided to land at Marana (MZJ) to check it out. The Pro-Air's were at the FBO being de-fueled. Unfortunately, the de-fueler guy was the only person around (it was ghost town) and he was too busy to give one of his impromptu tours. We wandered around a bit and then taxi up and down for a while, checking out all of the planes.

If you ever get a chance to go to Marana, I would highly recommend it. Lots and lots of planes stored there. One of the NASA B747's (N905NA I believe) was down there, as well as a bunch of active Evergreen B747's. I'd like to go back there soon...

Yep...a friend of mine flew to Lagos recently and the derelict planes and hangar are still sitting there frozen in time. The amount of waste in Nigeria is always breathtaking.

>Is there cockpit commonality between the MD-80/MD-90 series of aircraft?

No, the MD90 used a completely new computerized cockpit. So unless Delta ordered these with the MD80 cockpit (which is possible), then they require a separate cert for the pilots.

Nigeria again. Grab what you can, and if it doesn´t work immiadetely, abandon it... Anyone seen the Obasanjo-interview on CNN last week? Blablabla. Its a shame about that country. There is no country worldwide, which has such riches wasted, is managed so badly. Everyone who gets a post there, exploits it. It might have changed on a rather microscopic scale in recent years, but does that help? If it goes on in that speed, it will takes generations for that country to get healed.

Regarding the photos above: why the hell didn´t they try to sell these jets before it was too late?

Yes, Delta flies them. Mainly out of SLC, but you can find them elsewhere every now and then. I recently flew one DFW-ATL.

It makes me wince to see the photos. After many years of waiting I flew the 90 over the holidays in December on Delta. I flew SLC-PHX and then a nice long run from PHX to CVG. The crews had mixed opinions on the 90. One pilot, "This is the best aircraft around," to an f/a saying, "Try working in the galley. You bump your head a lot. And you can't move the trolley in and out of its hold easily." Another f/a was more positive. She even wanted to give me an MD-90 kiddie pin, but they only had 80s. Figures! I love the MD-90 and always will. I hope to get a few more flights on one before they are one day all gone. I imagine they will fly on in Europe to high-altitude locations such as the ones with "Hello." Boy the 90 looks sweet in their livery. As some have said, "What a waste."  Sad Now where's that lottery ticket? Y'know I could live in one.... cheeky  With some modifications, that would be a very cool bachelor pad...
