Picked for what?

Is this a new route?

If so, then they must see a market....not hard to imagine, OKC is large metropolitan area, BNA is a large metropolitan area, center of a large WN base, and a tourist draw...Why wouldn't they....that is if this is what you're talking about?

I've never flown to BNA. I didn't know WN had a base there. I just saw the flight on the schedule and I hadn't ever seen it until now. Learn something new everyday.

This is a route that I've thought should have been opened up for quite some time now. With no n/s flights to MDW, WN's connectivity out east is limited. This will allow for better connections out east. This route should perform very well for WN.

As said above, I guess a lot of it will be connecting. I'm surprised OKC and TUL don't have a n/s to MDW. When does BNA-OKC start by the way? Also it seems weird TUL has a couple MCI flights, it must be mostly connecting.

Okay, I didn't go to Wake Forest I'm sure not a chemistry grad student, so I know you're smarter than me, but why would anyone fly from BNA to OKC to connect east? They do have non-stops to BWI, RDU, BDL, and PVD and Florida.

BNA is WN 11th largest base, 82 non-stop flights and 3.1 million customers last year.

GEG-SLC

Why is that so surprising? Delta also flies the route..on and off with mainline.. there must be a market. Spokane is a medium size city, but also draws from Eastern Washington & Northern Idaho.

I'd imagine its set-up for connecting traffic.

Those all are set up for connecting basically and some O&D to help fill the planes. BHM-JAX is set up so JAX has one stop from LAS and BHM one stop to Florida. The plane does SEA-RNO-LAS-BHM-JAX-FLL.

I went to a link to some flight status thing off of the local news station's website and saw it. That's why it caught my eye. That was awhile ago though and so I assume WN has been running the route for awhile now.

The Wright Amendment..!! It's one way Southwest ties BNA to DAL. Also, the flight is not non-stop, but first goes to MCI.

I've never flown to BNA. I didn't know WN had a base there.

Southwest is the #1 airline out of BNA with around 80 flights a day.

I agree, Stirling. I looked under a couple of dates in April on the Southwest site and I see no directs or N/S between two said cities.

Here is the link to the site I got it from:

http://www.flyokc.com/webfids/html/index_aa.html

I don't see it either but it was there before.

Edit:

It must have been a seasonal thing.

To the best of my knowledge, WN's only nonstops from OKC are STL, MCI, DAL, HOU, PHX, and LAS. It's not a real big station... the service is the same as at TUL.

Sorry my post wasn't clear. The connectivity out east for OKC pax is improved by this flight.  Smile

Below might explain the growth at BNA

In the second quarter of 2005 (the latest information from the DOT),
Southwest transported more than 878,000 Customers to or from Nashville International Airport.

"Over the last year, Southwest handled more than 3.1 million Customers
in the Nashville area."

"Nashville ranks 11th largest in the Southwest system with 82 daily
nonstop flights."

"In second quarter 1995, Southwest carried 185,910 passengers at
Nashville International Airport. A decade later, second quarter 2005,
Southwest carried 878,680 passengers, an increase of 373 percent."

"Since 1990, Southwest Airlines has grown 560 percent in Nashville.

"Our growth in Nashville has been incredible, and our 348 local Employees deserve the credit," Wells said."

I fly MDW-MCI on WN a lot, and the flight I am on usually continues on to TUL. I can say that, while it is at night, the flight from MCI-TUL is pretty busy, but a lot of times, it isn't in fact people getting on simply from MCI-TUL, but are already on from MDW or points before. So, as far as people connecting in MCI itself to go to TUL, there don't seem to be that many, and that's combined with the people who actually beging their journey itself in MCI.

OKC-BNA seems like an interesting route to me, but if there's an airline that can pull of interesting routes, it's WN. I remember here in MCI when I saw a flight leaving at about 9pm for a nonstop flight to Sacramento...oversold. I mean, in this post 9/11 world, how many airlines could not only sell out but oversell a nonstop MCI-Sacramento flight. I find it interesting some of the routes WN is able to pull off with success.

This is why I brought this up. The route struck me as incredibly odd. Seeing a WN 73NG coming in from off the OKM(Okmulgee) VOR into OKC. Then seeing the flight on the link I provided a few posts up. Does anyone who has worked at WN know anything about when the route was run and for how long? It has been within the last year.

EDIT:

To clarify, the flights were always coming in along I-40 from due east. The flights from MCI-OKC almost always over fly SWO(Stillwater) which is way north of OKC and west of TUL. OKM is south of TUL about 30-40 miles for those not familiar with the area.

Well, what was the flight number? If it was 7xxx or 8xxx series, it was just a charter flight of some sort. Did Vanderbilt University or any other BNA area sports team play iin the OKC area, or vice versa?
That would be my guess.

Didn't get a flight number. It was a -700 with winglets. Oklahoma University is NCAA in the metro area. I sitll hope someone at WN knows about the flights, if it was a route that was tried or charters or what.

I've been with SWA for about 25 seasons and have never seen scheduled service BNA-OKC. You may see an occasional BNA-westbound flight fuelstop there, or a medical emergency, or charter/ferry, or mechanical drop-in, but scheduled service? Nope.

This is a link to the WRWA's FIDS system, it should not be used to look at anything more than arriving flights. Direct flights and code-share flights sometimes show up under a seperate listing, versus the scrolling flight information you would see at the airport. You'll notice you'll see flights from like IAD on DL or SAT on WN, both of these are flights that have stops en route...ATL on DF and DAL on WN. There is no non-stop BNA flying done by WN, and I wouldn't expect it anytime soon. WN has very little interest in growing OKC...TSA/UA seems to have more interest than anyone now.

University of Oklahoma is the main Division I school in the Metro with Oklahoma State just up in Stillwater. However, they are not the only school with NCAA sports as OCU, UCO, etc all have athletics as well.
