40 Minutes To Change Planes In ORD

Thu Mar 23, 2006 3:50 am

Hi.

I'm travelling from Norway to Fargo, ND this may. However, I see from my ticket confirmation printout that I only have 40 minutes to change planes in ORD, and I wonder if this will be sufficient time. I will arrive in Terminal 1 on UA 653 from EWR at 7:05 pm, and my flight to Fargo, UA 5565, leaves Terminal 2 at 7:45 pm. I won't have to go through immigration since this will be done in Newark.

Also, if I should be unfortunate enough to miss my flight, are UA staff friendly in providing an overnight stay? It really won't be that much of a problem for me to arrive a day later, and since I'm travelling Star Alliance all the way I know I am entitled to a hotel for the evening if I should miss my flight due to, for instance, late departure from EWR.

Iv never had a connection in ORD but the last time I was there I was outside the terminal about 20 mins after landing so if I did have a connection id say I would have made it. it is cutting it tight tho I usually like to keep 2hrs free for a connection!

OK. I also prefer to have two hours for connections, but unfortunately I'm stuck with this situation now, so I guess I just have to hope everything works out well!

But does anyone know if changing terminals might be a problem? I find it a bit strange that I have to change terminals considering that I'm both arriving and departing on UA.

You'll be fine even if your flight runs up to 20 minutes late, just run, youll be okay. UA ground staff is pretty acommodating as far as i know. My girlfriend flew CVG-ORD-FAR, missed her connection due to weather and they put her up in the Radisson and on to FAR on the next morning flight. Just wondering what brings you to Fargo from Norway? Other than the cultural connection of north dakota and norway i see no reason why anyone from europe would pick fargo as a destination.

(unless ofcourse you are a college student coming for an exchange program)

i myself will be heading FROM north dakota TO norway this summer for study abroad.

Well, actually my brother is getting married to an American girl in Grand Forks  Smile. He is a student there, and I'm going there to perform my duty as best man! I'm looking forward to going since I really love visiting the US. My trip to Hawaii two years ago was truly a dream vacation  Smile.! And I also feel close to the US since I lived in Virginia between summer 1996 and summer 1998.

You're switching from United mainline to United Express, that's why you have to walk to another terminal.

I made it in the past with similar change-times, so you should be fine unless UA653 we're to be behind schedule significantly. The walk between the 2 terminals shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes unless you're a real slow walker.

Here is a map of United's facilities at Chicago O'Hare airport.

Going from Concourse B to C (and vice versa) is easy - there is a tunnel with moving walkways (that never move fast enough for me - I prefer to walk!!) there is no additional security to deal with.

As for the 40 minute transfer time, under normal circumstances, this will not be a problem. However, if there are any delays, you could be stuck in Chicago overnight waiting for the next flight.

I wish you happy travels!!

Are you sure it's flight 5565 and not flight UA6909? I checked several dates in May and ual.com keeps coming up with this flight# (6909) for the 19:45 flight from ORD to FAR (arriving at FAR @ 21:42). Maybe the flight# has changed(?)

Also if you head over to gate C9 there is a shuttle that takes you over to T2. If you get into your gate late, it can cut down some of the time. As for a hotel, I know in RIC we dont get any kind of compensation for weather delays. As for as people getting something for a delayed/cancelled flt due to weather, I've never heard of United doing it. Some of the agents up there are really nice, some however, are quite rude and annoying. And that time of night, they're usually pretty battle tested. But I've made T2 to T1 connections in 15 minutes, so I think you'll have more than enough time

40 minutes is not enough time in ORD. I would suggest a minimum of 1 hour or better for connections. You will arrive into the B or C concourse and then have to transition over to the F concourse swimming against the current the entire way. Even with the shuttle from C to E it is not quick enough.

40 mins is by far enough time. 1 hour? Do you have any idea how much that would cost in lost connection opportunities? The only reason it's at 40 is for connecting baggage. LAX/SFO are at 30 mins connect time UA to/from UAX.

There was a time when ORD had 29 minute connections UA to/from UA. Also he arrives from EWR, a Business One city. All flights from Biz One arrive on Terminal 1, B-side. From B to F is at most 10-15 minutes.

1945 is the start of the Westbound bank, so there will be many flights arriving around 1845-1900.

According to UA, minimum connection time at ORD is 29 min, so you should be OK. Whether you'll need to rush or not at ORD depends on which gate your plane arrives at (B or C concourse). Weather may be a factor, as in it may cause delays, but hopefully you'll be fine. Just don't waste time at the terminals by gazing around or anything like that.

I've walked from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 at ORD in under 20 min, so 40 minutes should be more than enough time. Then again, I am a fast walker.

Edit: Added general question: Is EWR considered a Business1 destination? If so, then the plane should arrive at Concourse B, making it an easy walk over to Terminal 2.

EWR is a Biz1 destination or the other way to look at it the new United Shuttle. Anyways ORD and ATL are 2 of the worst for connecting in under an hour.

You will have plenty of time. You'll arrive in Terminal 1 on the B side and if you find the dinosaur bones (you can't miss them) walk to gate B6 and B7 there will be a Wolfgang Puck Restaurant and directly across is a connecting tunnel that will take you right into Terminal 2 without exiting the secured area. You should make it with no problem. My bet is 15 minutes. When you take the trip, let us know how long it took you and Congratulate your brother from all of us at A.net

Thank you so much for the info everyone! I truly appreciate it. I will be certain to memorize some of the advice you've given me!

I plan to take lots of photos and post a trip report here at airliners. I just hope security won't confiscate my camera if I snap away at US airports  Smile

You may be right in that the flight number has changed. My printout is already a few months old so the flight numbers may not be up to date on it.

I've had a 29 minute connection at ORD, due to late arrival of incoming flight from YYC. Both flights were AA, and typically the gates for arrival and departure, were at opposite ends of the terminal.

I made it, and even more miraculous - so did my luggage!

Probably. Well, the departure time is still the same, that's the main thing.
Have a wonderful trip!
