A380 At ORD

Thu Mar 23, 2006 3:55 am

My contact at LH said they would like to bring the 380 to ORD in 2008. It makes sense. All the LH and UA FRA flights are consistantly full and they will have FIVE flights this summer season. KE also does quite well but they only fly the 747 sporatically. AF also has the whalejet in the works but I don't know how ORD does for them.

IIRC the city said that it didn't want to foot the entire bill to upgrade the gates at T5. With LH they would also need to upgrade one of the double bridged gates over at UA T1. Does anybody know the facts behind this?

That's cool, as I will be commuting between ORD and FRA a lot over the summer, but I can't find those 5 flights just yet. So far, I have four ORD-FRA, two of which operated by UA, one ORD-DUS (not daily) and two ORD-MUC (again, one a UA flight). What am I missing ?

This being said, I would expect LH to fly anything they can in June and July on account of the Football World Cup.

THanks for the headsup! The summer schedule has a 747/340/333 with LH and two 777 codeshare by UA plus the MUC / DUS svc.

Well for one thing. I don't think that the plane will fit on the taxiways, there are service roads that are parallel with the taxiways and runways, and there light poles on them, so if they don't make them bigger, then no dice.......

This appears to be the real show stopper. They have the same problem in SFO, but they will simply shut down a taxi way for 15 or so minutes when the magnumjet is moving around. This is not so easy at ORD. I don't have the reference handy, but it will cost a lot of money to make ORD A380 friendly. And the city is not going to do it on their own nickel.

And I don think the city of chicago would want to close the airport for 15 min just to do that.......If they did, that would be the dumbest thing that the ORD would do, just like letting FLYI waste there time and gates, which is worse, take your pick...

God will close the airport with a big storm but Mayor Daly will not because hes a capitalist. He likes money. Close the airport to position an airplane is kinda dumb, especially to a capitalist.
My concern is not where to taxi it but where to park it.

If LH didn't need to reposition aircraft between T5 for arrivals and T1 for departures, then bringing the A380 into ORD wouldn't be such a headache. But moving a plane that size around Terminals 2 and 3, especially with planes for AA, AE, UA, and UAX constantly taxiing presents real problems.

The ORD-FRA flights are not that full. Yesterday, I booked award travel in F and had no trouble finding a seat on any flight I wanted for August.

I hope the landing fees are comensurate with the disruption.

ORD-FRA flights are nearly always full. Today for instance, 431, 435, 433 are all oversold in economy and business and First class is booked to over 75% between the three flights. 437 to DUS has also been experiencing very strong loads. In the past 6 weeks Mondays and Tuesdays have been on the light side of things, but things are picking up again and it can be hard to find a seat even on those days. During the summer months, the flights are typically extremely oversold in eco and business every single day, but the recent addition of the 3rd daily for JUL and AUG has allieviated some of the pressure. Give it time and that flight will fill up to. Also UA's flights to Germany are always nearly 100% full.

As if they don't have enough delays at SFO already. I'm dreading the day when that fugly beast shows up and screws my days up even more than SFO manages now.

At JFK they have already begun spending several million dollars upgrading the taxiway air bridges etc. to accomodate the A380...there was a big concern from a number of airlines in reference to LAX not upgrading facilities fast enough for those carriers planning A380 operations there,(ie VS).

You booked a premium cabin months out. F/C tend to sell closer to departure time as they tend to have business travelers.

As I understand it, the problems are that the taxiways are too close to each other and the A380 would touch other aircraft such as a 747. I've been looking for the reference. Also, expanding ORD is about impossible, given the hostile local natives.
