In Flight Service On Pan Am?

Fri Mar 24, 2006 9:28 am

What was the in flight service on Pan Am like? I recall in the 70s and early 80s they had an apalling reputation ex NZ and Australia. You flew them as a last resort.

Yet I flew them in 1980 from JFK- LAX for, would you believe, $75 and I thought they were fantastic. Had one of the best steaks on a half empty 747-100 and superb FAs.

Any other stories?

Check out the book 'The Company We Kept' - it's written by Jay Koren, an ex-Pan Am Purser. It's a great read and details a lot about their inflight service.

I flew with a good many ex-Pan Am F/A's at Northwest and they've all told fantastic stories of champagne, caviar, carving beef in the aisle, plating out food, etc.

Happy Flying.

First Class was always top notch. Clipper Class wasn't bad. The FA's paid attention to you only if you flew First. I had a very nice Polish FA working in First in June 1987 from FRA-DBV.
