Star/Oneworld/Sky Alliance News

Fri Mar 24, 2006 7:00 pm

Hi guys,
does anyone have an update as to any major alliance changes ?
All I know at the moment is very limited..

Malaysian - Possible Sky Team
JAL - Oneworld (definate)
Egyptair - Star Alliance
Ryanair - Oneworld .......  Wink

any ideas if any of the Hawaiian airlines will be joining an alliance ?
Just curious thats all... also has their been talks of possible shifts in the star alliance ? I recall somewhere that Austrian were unhappy ??

Cheers,

Joe

they may very well be unhappy - LH is moving into a lot of destinations OS have traditionally considered to be theirs .. and OS were apparently very unhappy about LX coming onboard ... but since OS have entrusted their entire res system and ff programme to LH it would be very expensive and difficult for them to shift out of Star

Hi BHXDTW - nice to see you online!
Here is some info:

- Set to join as soon as possible.
- set to become part of the alliance in early 2007.
- set to join at the turn of 2006/2007.

- will become a member this year
- will become a member this year

As you mentioned Egyptair have announced their interest to join.

- I read on a.net that they are set to join in April this year.
- to become 'Associate Member' in mid 2007.

MH is also in negotiations to join.

For all three alliances expect to see growth in India and China. There are rumours of CZ, CA, MU in China and 9W + S2, AI + IC in India joining alliances.

Hope this helps + hope you're well  Wink

My bets are on:

AI/IC - *A (given AI's close ties with LH, FFP partnership, FRA as an AI mini-hub etc.)

9W/S2 - could swing to either OW or ST (I hope they go to ST). I don't think there's much chance of this alliance on *A (once again - due to AI's existing ties to LH).

Being somwhat involved in the transition to Terminal 5 from T1 and T4 it has been made aware at the regular meetings that as T5 will be a "B.A." Terminal ONLY....all One World alliance partners will be operating from Terminal 3 !! Will this mean that all new alliance partners due to be joining soon will also transfer to T3 ? I'm not sure as will seem T3 will reach capacity sooner than later. It is confirmed that British Mediterrean and G B Airways, franchises of BA are going to T3 as they do not have containerised baggage systems. BA domestic fleet, also operating from T5 are being studied for alteration to containerised baggage before 2008 to be able to fit in with the baggage handling systems in T5

I know EK does its own thing and wants to rule the world in all, but have they ever considered joining an alliance? I know they do FF with VS etc..
Actually what about VS? I would think they would be a good candidate for Star Alliance to balance out BA... I guess SQ for whatever reason is holding back? I don't see why though!

Rumours suggest that it's Lufthansa that's holding it back. Virgin is a major competitor for them on the US-Europe market.

OS has no other choice. They are much too dependent on LH. Probably it is only a matter of time that they are bought by LH as they did with LX.

Does LH fly US-UK? Does VS fly US-Europe? I thought that they both didn't do that? If thats the case then I don't see a problem. Also VS could be a good feeder for LH from UK into Europe.
If VS did join Star then it would mean 3 carriers with the hearing bone shaped completely flat business class seats! standardisation across fleets is a good efficiency and marketing strategy! VS, NZ, AC. Perhaps UA might follow since they are looking at doing a complete revamp and standardisation of their business class. Imagine that... (not sure if VS would let them though since they own the license)

Last time I checked, the United Kingdom was part of Europe. Except for the MAN-MCO route, VS does not fly any non-London - US route.

VS has a competitive advantage for London - US routes as they offer it non-stop, whereas LH has this advantage from FRA or MUC. From many other European airports, they are defenitely competitors.

ALthough I could not find fares for this on their website, VS mentions they codeshare with BD for European destinations:

Quote:

We have carefully co-ordinated our schedules with bmi in order to offer convenient connections between Alicante, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Hanover, Madrid, Milan, Naples, Nice, Palma, Paris and Venice and many of our Heathrow services.

For any of these cities to the US, LH and VS are competitors. Even for LHR-US - if LH offers a good cost advantage, people will consider flying LHR-FRA-USA.

Possibly have Virgin and BMI merge too. Giving BMI profitable Long haul flights! ehh ehh!?!? maybe it could work.

The alliance that will expand the fastest in the near future is SkyTeam. Tarom, MEA, COPA, Kenya and Air Europa will join as associate members. And Aeroflot as a full member. Let's see what happens with China Southern and Malaysian. I hope MH is invited as a full member rather than just an associate member since MH is a world-class airline that would finally give SkyTeam better access to Australia (KE's flights to BNE and SYD from ICN, and CO's flights to CNS from HNL are close to nothing).
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Just a word on EK, they are thought to have an agreement with EI on 10 routes around Asia and the Middle East. EI will start flying DUB-DXB on March 28th but there has been no news on the agreement yet.

Yeah, hence why Bangkok and other cities popped up on the Aer Lingus web page as codeshare flights with EK that lets you only get so far before hitting an error  Smile

What is the meaning of being an "associate member" exactly? I guess that it's something involving less integration than in the case of a full member, but does an associate member still offer reciprocal FF program, elite-qualifying miles, etc? Thanks!

AFAIK, an associate member offers the same services to the customer, but has less influence in the decision and voting process within the alliance.

Joining in 2006-2007:
- Malev
- Royal Jordinian
- Japan Airlines

My guesses on the OneWorld starting with most probable and ending with well aligned but less probable:
- Mexicana
- China Eastern
- SN Brussels
- Air Pacific
- Alaska Airlines

I had read an very interesting article in the last "Format" (a business weekly journal from Austria) with the CEO of Emirates Sheik Ahmed, which had said, that Austrian had contact Emirates concerning an merger or an partnership.
That shows clearly that Austrian is very unhappy about their present situation in Star Alliance and that OS is looking for an alternative way with an other big airlines.

I don´t think that EK will merger with OS, but for EK OS could be a very interesting partner, because OS has a big eastern european network and VIE become a easteuropean hub.

FJ , I believe , have decided that the costs of full membership would outweigh the benefits of OW membership ...if OW ever decides to bring in a lower level of participation like Star ( regional member ) and Skyteam ( associate member ) then that may change

As said by Joost, an associate is part of the alliance but does not have any representative in the alliance "council"....

They also have to adopt one of the full members FFP
Copa already has CO OnePass
Kenya Airways has AF-KL Flying Blue
but Tarom and Air Europa will have to adopt AZ MileMigia and AF-KL Flying Blue

Basicly It's like being a regional franchise à la GB airways and BMED for BA or Jazz for AC

Where did you get this information from? Never heard about this and I also do not see the need behind it. Kenya already joined Flying Dutchman a long time ago, and they just merged to FB together with KL. I don't see why a regional member should give up it's FFP.

I wouldn't mention it like that. A regional franchise for example, is not selling it's own tickets, they are only a operator of flights for their parent company. Regional airlines don't do their own pricing structure and marketing. AC determines the prices on AC Jazz, markets and sells the flights.

Affiliates of alliances still do their marketing and revenue management all alone. KLM is their sponsor in SkyTeam, but KLM is nowhere involved (except as a shareholder) in KQ flying NBO-JNB.

Frequent Flyer Reciprocity: Associate Airlines will adopt the frequent flyer program of one of the Member airlines. This step will help expedite the integration process enabling passengers to get frequent flyer benefits sooner.
http://www.skyteam.com/EN/aboutSkyteam/pressCenter/pr060905.jsp

That's what was said then and I've read in several interviews that Air Europa is working on getting integrated into FB (as codeshares are already in place from time ago)

And about the regional franchise... I only tried to put it simple... Of course Air Europa will not be such a close partner for AF like BritAir or Regional are... but regarding alliance representation/decisions and FFP, it doesn't seem to be different

allthough in this article from "Les Echos" (french economic press) CZ is said to join the alliance in 2007, where the expression "join" seems to mean really join i(it's just in French and subjected to payment/subscription)...
