Blair With BA 777 In BRU - Why Such A Big Plane?

Fri Mar 24, 2006 10:17 pm

Hello all I just noticed a BA 777 at the abelag stand in BRU, I assume that this is to transport Blair for the EU top... why is he using a 777 to fly from London to Brussel? It has to be a massive cost, no?

It has been decided that when the Prime Minister travels on Official Business Holidays'....errr I mean Trips, he should now go by "big jet".

The is incase he is required for any reason to travel urgently to the other side of the world, whilst away from the UK.

There's probably a suply of suit's and shirts from Saville Row in the hold.

Flights within the UK, 737's are preferred for some reason.

On a side note: he needs the hold space for all those loans he get's.  Smile

There is another thread. Blair and 60 others are flying nonstop to Melbourne today. It would have been pointless in flying in on a 737, only to ferry the larger 777 for the next flight.

Give the head of states some break. There are always a reason for what they do. It is not a pissing contest. Edit: Mine are bigger than yours.

Bush uses the 757 on shorter routes, but to a less extent, than his predecessor Clinton. When protecting the US president there are very strict rules, and there are allot of security people there to protect him. People have a nasty habit of shooting the presidents and other VIPs when their life's are miserable.

At least our PM simply leases an aircraft most of the time instead of pissing away many millions on a rarely used widebody for official visits etc.

Why is Blair on his way to Melbourne? For the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, so that he can stand with the world leaders?

Please tell me that this is not the reason.

He will be at the closing ceremony although thats not the reason he is going.

He will be addressing the Australian Parliament in Canberra on Monday as well as holding talks with Aussie PM John Howard over Iraq.

I also hear he will be going to New Zealand as well.

I dont understand why people make such a big deal about heads of state using large aircraft to get around. Could they do it for cheaper? Probably! But in the big scheme of things, amount of money spent on VIP travel is peanuts. So what if Bush flies on a 747, and Blair takes 777 around? The money saved if they flew on a 757 or a 737 would be insignificant.

Here we go again. Blair is not a "head of state". He is a Prime Minister, who is normally the leader of the political party that has the greatest majority in the House of Commons. The Queen is the head of state in England & Wales, and Blair is her servant (although both Mr and Mrs Blair would like you to believe it was the other way round).

Her Majesty is head of state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland! England and Scotland have shared the same monarch since 1603 - that's 104 years before the Act of Union between England & Scotland. Sorry if I seem rather pedantic but I feel compelled to speak up for the home nations, particularly Scotland as there is a tendency to forget about them! I'm not Scottish, but nonetheless it is important not to forget the home nations!

The president needs his 747 its the flying white house he can do everything from it. If something should happen he could be airborne and still do his job thats the reason for the 747. When Clinton was in office we had not been attacked on our own soil yet so 757 would be better off. The Britts should think about goverment plane or planes for the PM

But at least Blair is learning. Last time he travelled outside Europe on official business he went to South Africa in a Swiss DC-8 and it went tech and he got stranded. So now he has returned to good old reliable BA - unless they prove me wrong!

I would like to see the USAF dump the 742s as AF1 and move over to 772 or 773 (one of each perhaps). The size of the White House Press Corp is the reason for the switch to a much larger 742 back in 1989. AF1 must contain certain encrypted communications equipment and other tools the commander in chief of the US military must have at his disposal. The British Government merely leases a 772 from BA for the PM travels outside the home area of the UK. That allows the 10 Downing Street Press Corp to fly along with the PM as well as his entourage and security team. Canada does something similar for Stephen Harper by leasing an AC 767 or A330 or A340 to go overseas. Who knows, since Bush and Harper are partisan bedfellows perhaps they could "Jet-pool" on AF1 for joint trips abroad!

Usually the second VC25 is taken for logistics and as a decoy. I would assume Blair doesn't so much need a decoy because other BA jets act as the decoy anyway.

And you have these data where and are showing it to us where? I believe you are full of crap. Clinton used the 747 for many, many short trips, and he traveled more than Bush domestically for more fundraisers for the DNC and candidates, all with the 747, because he was more popular, especially with his own party candidates.

The Preident of the US does not fly on the 757, ever, unless both of the VC25 go technical or are in maintenance. The VP does, as the First Lady as well as other members of the cabinet on very particular engagements.

I think you got it the wrong way around. Tony Blair is Prime Minister of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland while the Queen is the Head of the Commonwealth. She is also Head of State of all countries that are members of the Commonwealth that are not Republics. The most notable of these are Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

So while Blair's domain stretches from Penzance in the south to Lerwick in the north - about 800 miles - the Queen's stretches from Lerwick in the north to Dunedin in the south or around 12,000 miles. Her need therefore appears to be greater than his.

And to fallstall any other ill informed comment, the Commonwealth is not an anachronistic left over of Empire. It is a growing organisation that nation states that have no historic links with the UK such as the former French colony, Cameroon and the former Portugese colony, Mozambique, have recently chosen to join. (However as both of these countries are republics the Queen is not their head of state.)

Our so called socialist Prime Minister should certainly NOT have his own plane(s). As pointed out, he is the Prime Minister of the UK, a tiny place. In the UK he should use rail travel for going outside London, further a field he should fly a schedule airline, or charter an aircraft where this isn't practical.

I can understand why the President of the USA has a plane, it's a big country - ours isn't. And now that power has been vastly devolved to the Scottish parliament and Welsh Assembly, there is even less reason for the PM to leave England, let alone the UK.

Why would Tony Blair fly in a 777 to BRU?
I could only think of two reasons:
1. 777 is one cool "bird" which not even heads of states can't resist.
2 Rub some salt on Chirac's bleeding ego.
Speaking of Chirac, what a pathetic individual. He got upset at the EU conference, took his toys and left the conference room. Stupid!!!
Bravo Blair!

Our PM is flying an A300 international but he prefers to take the car and drive 2 hours to go from the south to the North of Belgium  Wink

In response to DJM

I never figured you could relate size of country with size of plane !
The UK may be a small country geographically but it has possibly the strongest economy in Europe at present and is a major player in the world economy.

Hey MajorNelson...

Why don't you come to RO, since I get the impression that even you blod is blue. Here, you would feel "at home" and welcome among the corrupt "commies" and I'll take your place any day in America under that "clown".

Deal?

Major Nelson said--

"Actually that clown of a president of ours has two 747s (which boggles my mind)! Fortunately he doesnt get to take them with him after he's finished!"

--indeed, that fool Clinton would love to have a jet or three,,,since he raided the White House on the way out,,,well White Trash is White Trash!..

Who really cares what they fly???? get a damn life

Quoting OyKIE (Reply 10):
Bush uses the 757 on shorter routes, but to a less extent, than his predecessor Clinton. When protecting the US president there are very strict rules, and there are allot of security people there to protect him. People have a nasty habit of shooting the presidents and other VIPs when their life's are miserable.

Do those 757s that the government bought for VIP transport have the same protection package on them as the official VC-25? I figured they could do the wire insulation and stuff, but didn't know about some of the other stuff. BTW, what kind of systems do you really think are on the VC-25 that we have seen in movies, like the missle defense system, escape pod, etc.? How long do you think they will continue using the 747-200 based planes, and when they get new ones, what do you think they'll get?
