SR MD-11

Wed Jun 07, 2000 5:54 pm

Can someone told me why Swissair does not have a MD-11 with the registration HB-IWJ?
Thanx

Hey SR3496
I am very sorry I can't answer your question at the moment but I try to find it out (perhaps Teahan or Avion know it). I only can tell you that it is true, there is no "IWJ" although SR has for example "IQJ" (A 330-200) or "IOJ" (A 321).
I am wondering about your user name "SR3496". Do you often fly to Baku? The SR flight 3496 is a flight to Baku on a Crossair MD 83.

Kind regards

Could it be, that this reg was already reserved for another plane? On the other hand, which swiss carrier would register a widebody in the early 90's...?

Definitely a mistery

ZRH:
No I do not often fly to Azerbaijan, but I was there last September and it was the first time I flew Crossair. The plane usually used is the HB-ISZ, with 17 rows Business class seats and so I flew in a business class seat (both ways) and it was fantastic!!
If I speak about that trip with somebody, all people say "What Baku?!? What did you do there?" and I answer "Yes it is an unusual destination but just tourism!"
BTW Baku is a very nice city!

Hi guys,I hope I can give an idea eventhough I'm not
really sure!I think that is due to the possible missunderstanding between "j" and "i" wich is standard to be avoided in aviation! For example most of the electrical plugs installed in aircraft usually use only one of those as well as only one between "O" and "Q" tu reduce the chance of confusion!!
Now the reason that brought SR to change idea about the new fleet it's unknown to me ,maybe they just relaxed.
Ihope that this may help and maybe sombady can conferm my theory.

First of all. If I am not mistaken, all posters in this topic are from Switzerland, right? So, go back in your memories. When I saw the post of HB-IGG, it reminded me, that some years ago in Switzerland many series of alphanumeric registrations didn't have the "J". I can't recall any example, but I noticed it already elsewhere. Evenmore: do you remember how "J" was spelled at school? Depending on the school, this letter was named "Joggeli I" or however else. This letter isn't used very much in our language.

Now, Perhaps the guy at the aviation administration (BAZL) has been fired and they have now a young guy, who sees the difference between an "I" and an "J".

Salu mitenand
HB-IGG has perhaps the explanation? But didn't they have already registrations with a "J" on older aircrafts like the DC 9 / MD 80s ?

When did SR remove the overhead retractable closet between 3L and 3R and change the C class seating to seven across? Thanks,Louis.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Teahan:
Have you heard rumours of introducing a new biz class. I spoke to an employee of SR and he said that SR will introduce a new biz class that reclines some 170 degrees. Thats nearly flat. It will be presented during august this year.

Nice! Now I know, what I miss, when I walk down the aisle to the economy class. :-(

Will it be introducd in the MD-11 and/or the A332? It would be interesting, because we will fly next year to Montreal.

I loved the closet/cross aisle and the 3 toilets in the old C Class of the MD11. I often used to stand back there and look throught the tiny MD11 door windows if I did not have a window seat! From what I can remember it was in 1996 or 1997!

Avion, I heard stories of that because the current C Class was a big dissapointment! But, what you should not forget is that SR have one of the cheaper European C Classes.

The C class is equally expensive like AF or LH. The C class price to Los Angeles is 4500.-. Lufthansa and AF only ask for 3500 on the same route via the respective hub.
Teahan 2-3-2 on the MD11 is nothing unusual because it has about the same with as the 777.
I hav heard from an employee that the new C class will have an 170 degrees reclining but the 2-3-2 arrangement will remain unchanged.

The single biggest complaint (in the surveys they sometimes hand out inflight) that C Class passengers had on long haul flights was the 2-3-2 seating!

The SR service is also much poorer than other airlines in C Class. The service is often quite patchy, the entertainment system is one of the poorest (I know about teh new PTV's but they are not installed yet)
etc. I will check some fares later on.
