Jet Service In Michigan

Sat Mar 25, 2006 10:08 am

Back in the days of Republic/ North Central, so many of the smaller Michigan airports saw DC-9's. Anyone have memories of those flights?

Flew out of Marquette many times on the North Central DC-9. Usually flew to Green Bay by the way of Escanaba, to switch planes to MSP or ORD. (Yea Green Bay was the super-mini hub for NC). Flights to DTW went ESC, GRB, GRR, LAN and finally to DTW. I remember one flight continued on to CLE and another to BOS when NC got DTW to BOS authority. Great service, dependable even in the nasty winters.

I remember driving by the airport way up north in Pellston and seeing a North Central DC-9 parked and passengers using the stairs to get on/off the a/c. That was 1979.

old  I remember flying from PLN to DTW on a DC-9-30 back when North Central Airlines was king of the north. I also flew NCA APN to DTW and back on a DC-9-30. Nothing compairs to the Convair 580's  bigthumbsup  what an airplane. Loved the sound of those huge propjets in action. The route of the North Liners served our great state well.

Ahh yes...... Fondly remember seeing NCA DC-9s in GRR, LAN, TVC, DTW..... The CV-580's were always my favorite though.... loved those big Allisons swinging those huge paddles....

NCA had some really unusual routes compared to today's hub/ spoke routes too.
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

Good to see that some of the smaller Northern Michigan cities are still seeing mainline service. That seems to be one thing that Northwest is good at. They just don't run CRJs and SF3s to the smaller cities but also throw in a mix of DC9s and the occasional A319/320.

I remember flying on the CV-580's out of Jackson Mi. I would fly to DTW and on to SRQ back in the late 70's and early 80's. I loved North Central (The Blue Goose). When that service stopped we then went to AZO and flew on the DC-9's to DTW or to ORD. In 1978 I flew from AZO to ORD to GRB to Houghton/Hancock. All on DC-9's. Then the ATC went on strike. Spend and extra week their in the summer. I remember it was hell getting back home. I traveled for 18 hours that day to get back to AZO.

In March 1972 I flew GRR-MKE on a jet (well, actually a "PJet," denoting CV-580) with North Central for an online connection to a DC-9-30 flight MKE-MSP. Only memories are seeing virtually nothing except cloud cover below after climbout from GRR; MKE-MSP on the 'nine was at night, so little of the flight is remembered except for seeing snow falling rather heavily on approach to MSP.

Seating on North Central's Convairs was as comfortable and spacious as Y in any pure jet type of the time and perhaps even more so than some Y seats of today.

I can't think of all the routes I flew NC on, I flew so many. One of the more interesting ones was a CV-580 that went ORD-BEH-GRR-AZO-DTW. We'd fly to GRR on the Convair and back N/S on a DC-9. Or if we were adventerous, we'd take the UA DC-8 to ORD.
Also flew on both CV-580's & DC-9-30s to TVC for skiing. GRB to girlfreinds parents house.
Since DL was across the hall at ORD, there were lots of connects between DL and NC.

One of my fav's on NC was a 580 trip LAN-GRR-BEH-ORD June of 74.
I loved that one....wife wanted to kill me for taking her along on that trip.
....so.....what else is new?
