Is This Plane Really In Service?

Sat Mar 25, 2006 10:15 pm

I was looking to pictures on the website when I ran across this one.

I am wondering.....is this plane really in service and does AF have a hand in their cleaning schedule ?
Or is this plane stored or gounded maybe ?

If it is still in service, this is the dirtiest plane, currently in service, that I have ever seen.

thx  Smile

It has been stored at Lagos since November 2003. Planespotters.net even says it's a write-off.

Engine 2 seems to be lower than the others and the hatch is left open on engine 1.

Would it be as dirty if it was in service? Bearing in mind that the more hours in flight the more productive an aircraft is, surely one that spent most of its time flying would be above the clouds, therefore unable to attract the rain-borne pollution like the one in the photo?

Definitely not, I remember seeing this plane at JNB and it was pristine.

Funny how "Hydro" is in that planes name. It can use some
"Hyrdro" about now.

The Hydro group of companies has a bit of an obsession with cleanliness. I used to work for Hydro Holdings in Silverton, Pretoria for a short while and every vehicle bearing their name was kept spotless. The workshop floor was even kept as shiny as any floor in an army barracks before inspection. The cleaners would wash the floors every day from front to back.

Such a shame this plane is now in such a sorry state.

From what I have seen AF have really cleaned up their act, literally. Much rarer to see a very dirty plane from them now. IB have taken their place, have you seen the state of some of their planes?!

You guys writing tongue in cheek? I have NEVER seen an in-service airliner THAT dirty, including of Air France.

Anyway, that airplane was damaged beyond economical repair awhile back, and is now being left to rot. It's an eyesore.

That's because the struts on the MLG on the left side is deflated in part or fully, due to a leak.

Look at the wings, it's not level.

If you look through the photos at the aviation-safety.net database link posted above, the aircraft sustained a lot of damage that is not seen on the pictures on airliners.net . The left wing was damaged heavily, particularly the flaps, and the left under-wing landing gear was ripped out during the accident. That is why the plane is leaning to its left, as part of the landing gear is missing. It's a write-off because it would be way too costly to fix.

So is the subsequent damage from heavy pollution or what?

This aircraft was delivered to El Al in 75', El Al leased it to CAL Cargo, and then the aircraft was finally sold to Hydro in 00'. She flew for 2.5 years until her destruction upod landing in Lagos in 03'. The aircraft was worth more as a hangar queen as you see her than she was restored and placed back in service.

The wing spar was damaged, the flaps were damaged, as you can see the engines took a beating and the gear were all but holding the aircraft from the tarmac below. The aircraft owners can no longer be reached via the convential methods, so the future of this aircraft (even for part out, training, scrap, etc.) is uncertain. I do remember her being IMMACULATELY clean inside--smelled like a sanitized hospital inside.

Very appropriate as the owners used to own a number of private hospitals in South Africa.

Indeed. Few aircraft stick out so heavily in mind, but I do remember this one quite well. Eeek.. I just noticed at least 3 typos in my last post!  duck

This aircraft is the subject of legal action by Hydro Air Cargo against the Nigerian Government. Hydro are trying to get the Nigerian Government to pay for the damage to the aircraft ( I d'ont think there is much chance of that.)after ATC at Lagos instructed the captain to land on a runway that was closed for repairs and the aircraft collided with the construction equiptment that was on the closed runway.

It's realy a shame she has been written off... She was a frequent visitor here in Brussels; a visitor I looked out for every time. Imagine, after all those visits, I never had a good chance to take a picture of her in her glory days...:-s

While the actual details of this transaction are confidential, I can say that this aircraft has been delivered to Marana for a B check and repaint. Polar/Atlas run this aircraft as a cargo crate.. We were working with P/A for some time jointly marketing this aircraft on their behalf, and they finally snagged a buyer last month.

She was ugly, but operationally speaking she was in top-notch shape.

I understand the r/way closure was notamed and you have to remember the captain is ultimatly responsible for his a/c. When I took my radio license after getting my PPL it was drummed into me that ATC is advisory only.
