Worlds Shortest Runway

Mon Mar 27, 2006 8:37 pm

Anyone know the Worlds Shortest Commercial Runway.

Rules and Terms:

1. Runway must see atleast 1 commercial per day
2. Tidal Beaches and aircraft carriers don't count.

I'm Think the Isle Of Sky...But I can't find a runway length

This will be interesting. We have many runways here that are less than 1200 meters. Could not find any exact numbers, but I belive that the runways operated by Wideroe in Norway should be among some of the shortest runways in the World

Japan had a few 800m runways for DH6s but these have gone the way of history books for now.
Somewhere I read that Saba Island has an extremely short runway that DH6 pilots have to certified to fly into it.
Another interesting runway is St. Barts too.

According to the following pic the runway in GZM (Ghawdex, Malta) is just 174 meters long (less than 600 ft.) It has scheduled helicopter services to MLA.

I agree with this, It is apparently the worlds shortest commercial runway... It has "WinAir" Twin Otters doing Schedules Services to SXM

I once flew out of Juist (JUI/EDWJ).
This information states the length as 700m/2300ft.
http://www.airports.de/airport.php?ICAO=EDWJ
In summer they have up to 10 daily flights and in winter up to 5 flights on request.
http://www.reederei-frisia.de/index.php?id=285#533 (in German)
It's a very short flight to the island and back but ship can only operate in high tide.

That was what the swedish pilots complained about when they landed at Fornebu in Norway. They said the runway was so wide and short. They where told to land the same way as everyone else  Smile

Connemara Airport in West Ireland has a 375m runway and has quite a few daily flights (by Aer Arann - Britten Norman Islanders)

Coonagh Airport (Limerick) is 300m long I believe.

Connaught Regional in Ireland has regular Aer Arran scheduled flights each day to Inishmore in the Aran Islands.

Runway details are:

Connaught - 609 metres x 18 metres
Inishmore - 520 metres x 18 metres

The airline also flies scheduled services to Inishmaan:

546 metres x 18 metres

and Inisheer :

520 meters x 18 metres

All are permanent asphalt runways.

I can´t think of any runway operated with commercial flights, 737s and A319 (RG, JJ, G3), shorted than SDU. It´s 1230meters long and gets a lot of traffic every day.

Paros (PAS) in Greece sees a double-daily service of OA DHC-8. Runway length is 2300ft. Milos (MLO) 2600ft, is also served double daily by OA DHC-8. Naxos (JNX) has a runway lenght of 2900ft and is served by OA ATR42 daily. The touroperator I work for operates charterflights every season into Naxos from GRZ and KLU with an Austrian Arrows DHC-8-300Q with up to 50 pax on board (fuel stop at Lemnos). During the highseason we occasionally face weight problems, so luggage had to be offloaded once ore twice..I guess these 3 runways are one of the shortest in Europe..more information about runway lengths etc. on http://www.aircraft-charter-world.com/airports

The car park at Connaught is certainly bigger than the ramp!

I've done the Connaught-Inishmore run, about 6 minutes in an Islander at 750 feet. Beats over 50 minutes on the boat.

The Inishmore runway feels extremely short in the wet. I've been in and out of some short and very unrefined airfields on scheduled services but these, almost in my own back yard, take some beating for being primitive.

Never made the Arann Island run. Everytime I drove by it was too windy. And i sure wasn't going by boat.

But I will have to agree that it is very small runway.

Did you ever find me message, lad? If not send me one with yer email. Big grin

EI321,

Sorry, overlooked your post before. Connemara is in fact Connaught Regional and the actual details are as in my post.

Coonagh is not used for scheduled flights.

St. Bart's runway is so unique, and you need a special permit to land there. Since it was so easy to see the entire runway length, I took a few pics of it when I was there last week, but didn't stick long enough to see a plane land or take-off.

When were you there?

I was in St. Barths from the 11th to the 18th. Great place. I didn't spend much time spotting (10min or so), but I uploaded some pics to the database, I hope they are accepted.

While waiting to fly back to SXM on the 18th, we saw a Winair Twin Otter land and turn off the runway at the final turnoff. Pretty damn impressive at SBH.

If I were to give you 32,808,399 Argentine Peso and wanted to convert them to US dollars, would it mean something to you with a conversion rate of 3.2808399 ?

1 meter = 3.2808399 feet
