767-300 Overkill To Latin America?

It seems that there are not only quite a few frequencies each day between Los Angeles and important Latin American cities (SAL, GUA, SJO, PTY) but also that they command quite high fares.

For these flights, would it be overkill to run a 767-200 or -300 on these flights? Sure you wouldn't need the full range afforded by the -ER models, but would the cargo and passenger lift be in line with the traffic potential for these cities? What about non-stop flights to GDL, MTY, or even other tag-on flights, perhaps to Teguicalpa, Managua, or Bogota?

AV is starting next June BOG-LAX-BOG nonstop with a 767 (don't know if -200 or -300), iirc, in a daily basis. Correct me if i'm wrong. This was heavily discussed in another thread, but pax and cargo had good revenue chances for AV, that's why they're starting that service again. Personally, i'm taking that flight in way to HNL next fall.

TA used to fly 767´s to LAX from SAL and GUA. I think they would do ok with probably an A332 as they have an airbus fleet. (especially with the new UA codeshare) They currently have 2 or 3 flights that depart no more than an hour diference from each other. TGU and MGA are still small markets. TA serves MGA with an A320 from LAX nonstop seasonally Mondays and Thursdays. I think TGU just doesnt have that big of a MArket to LAX.

Did they get rid of their 767's because the Airbus' arrived?

I am starting to believe that they were to expensive to maintain, and I don't think it was time for their retirement.
This is what happened on AM and MX's DC-10s.

A non-stop from MX or AA from MTY-LAX is really necessary all flights from 6A are always over booked and since 6A doesn't have an over booked flight system like an auction or somthing you could have bad luck.

I'm sure if AA could maintain A300s on the west coast, they would use them (for LAX-SAL, for example). But the 763s are busy elsewhere.

Although I do agree that bigger planes are warranted on many of these routes currently being served by the 738, 752, and 320 -- especially for cargo! It is true these flights have unusually high amounts of baggage and oftentimes they have to ship bagged through a freight carrier or on another flight just to get it all down there!

Could a 763 be used between LAX and Central America? sure, and such large equipment was used in the past. Pan Am used to operate a nightly A300 LAX-GUA-SAL while TACA used to use a single 762 on a similar route. Going further back into the 70s, Pan Am even used 747s between California and Central America, operating a minihub in Guatemala.

But instead these days, the market has fragmented with greater frequencies and a greater choice of destinations. So instead of only 2 daily LA-Central America services, there now are 10+ services using smaller aircraft offering nonstop services directly to Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama.
I'm not sure widebodies have a place in the market these days except maybe in the hands of TACA whom possibly can harness its strong San Salvador hub with connections thru out Central America and further afield to places like Peru. I don't see US carriers switching widebodies unless if they decide to double up destinations instead of having an individual narrowbody flight to each city.
