New Info On Finnair's A340-fleet

Wed Mar 29, 2006 5:20 am

Finnair's first A340-300, ex-VS G-VFLY (cn 058) will make it's first revenue flight in AY-colours on 1st July from Helsinki to Shanghai as AY057. The airframe will be dedicated to the daily HEL-PVG rotation, leaving only two hours of ground-time at Finnair's Helsinki-base and a longer maintenance layover every second week, when it will be substituted by MD-11. Pre-delivery maintenance will be done by SR Technics in Ireland and only small cabin modifications will be done at this stage. So maybe we will see the first Finnair in-flight bar, premium eco cabin and economy PTVs?

The registrations for the A343-fleet have been published, starting with OH-LQA for G-VFLY and followed by QB/C/D for the new airframes delivered in 2007. Q is just about the only letter still available in Finnair's OH-L** range of regs.

Id like to try Finnair longhaul, i have flown them LHR-HEL, HEL-CDG and HEL-FRA and I really enjoyed the flights. Pity they don't fly here!

I absolutely agree, so far AY's long haul product has not been more than ok (though they have done good business in Asia) but in Europe their are cool.

If only tw0 hours of ground-time in HEL, how much in PVG? How delay-prone is PVG, if at all? It's been a while since I was in China, and at that time, there often could be "unexpected things" here and there. There might be a chance for a nice long effect resulting from a single delay, if they are really to use a single a/c for the route. And also those tiny engines have numerous tiny parts, which might have some tiny problems every now and then. Four of those there, I believe.

Nationwide (CE) have a similar situation, they have one 767 that they use on the JNB-LGW run three times a week, so far it has worked out fine as far as I know. Careful planning and meticulous maintenance are the keys.

Indeed. It may be a plain Eurowhite livery with a small grey belly area, but their tail is what makes their colours look great. Big grin

Yes, I know, but do VS own it? My belief is that it's leased from Airbus so I assume that Finnair will be leasing it too.

Off topic, I believe that VS only own one of their A343s - G-VFAR. All the rest are leased.

Your original question was imo ambiguous, but hopefully this link will answer your question.....

To be honest I think it may be lsd fr ILFC (tried a search and could not find any info) - as to whether AY is doing that I am not sure.

OH-LQA will be bought by Finnair Aircraft Financing, a Finnair subsidiary and later sold to a leasing company and leased back.

Are they going to have eco PTVs in the future in their 343s and 350s? That would be an improvement! I wonder if they will be satisfied with 2-4-2 configuration - they could of course try to cramp another seat there too as has been done in MD11s in the aft section.

The MD-11 has always been 9-across. SR used to fly 2-4-3 and many other airlines did too. I'm not aware of any airlines that only had an 8-across arrangement while the only 9-across A330/A340s (that I'm aware of) are some charter A330s. The fuselage is significantly narrower than that of the MD-11. I've never flown AY but, as I understand it, they have a good long-haul product. I can't see them jeopardising that by squeezing in 9-across in Y. Anyway, do they need to? They currently get 296 CY seats into an MD-11. They must be able to get close to that in a two-class A343. In any case, might the A340s be used to open new Asian routes that may not need the capacity of an MD-11?

Finnair have 10-abreast on their MD-11s in the majority of the economy cabin, which is how they get 296 seats in!

According to Finnair their new A340s will get 304 seats and 314 seats for the A350s.

And trust me, having flown on an LTU MD-11 with 10-abreast seating, it's horrible.

Well it's not great, but I wouldn't say it's horrible. Finnair's mid-cabin is definitely nicer than the back, but it wouldn't prevent me from buying a ticket. Luckily 9 abreast on an A350 isn't very likely, so we shouldn't have to worry about strange seating differences in the future.

Maybe not at AY, but at LT, it was hell, since it was a 10 abreast seating in a single cattle class configuration. I don't remember the seat pitch, though I don't think it's that bad at AY, but at LT and their MD-11s, the legroom was already a bit too small for me, though I'm not that big (I do have somewhat longer legs).

I saw a VS A340-300 in DUB on Monday 3rd, it was standing in front of the big Sr Technics hanger there. Maybe it was the one going to AY. Did not see it's registration though.

Its interesting that Finnair is picking up an older A343 to start operations with the type.....the ex-Virgin bird is a rather early build model A343-311 dating from 1994 and pre-dates the enhancements and improvments that were included in the development of the (now) more typical A343-313X subvariant. The A343 has come a long way.....and this aircraft will offer less performance than the new delivery A340s that Finnair will receive next year. Its gonna be interesting to see if the ex-Virgin A343 remains with Finnair after the A350s are delivered......or will this A343 be retired with the MD11s?

I once did ZRH-HEL-BKK-HKG and PVG-HEL-ZRH on their MD11. On the first leg I was seated in the front Y-cabin which was nice. On the way back home I was seated in the back and it was horrible. Luckily they served a lot of KOFF and Lapin Kulta and this made the flight enjoyable.

Hope to see the A340 while I am in HEL from June 8 to June 11.
