Plane Crashes In Medellín On University Campus

Thu Mar 30, 2006 6:42 am

Just happened this morning at about 8:00 AM local time...

translation from El Colombiano newspaper, Medellín, Colombia:
Aircraft Crashes at UPB (Universidad Pontificia Boliviariana)

The accident involving a single-engined small aircraft, registered HK-2629,
left five people dead and six injured this Wednesday morning on the grounds of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB) in Medellín.

The accident occurred on the sports complex fields of the university, near to buildings which house primary and secondary level school programs.

The unfortunate incident occurred minutes after the aircraft belonging to a company named Nativa and piloted by 50 year-old José Ignacio Sierra took off from Olaya Herrera Airport destined for the municipalty of Ituango, located in the north of the department (Antioquia).

Metropolitan Police Chief, General Orlando Páez, indicated that the cause of the incident is unknown and stated that the weather conditions at the time in Medellín were perfect.

Nicolás Londoño, resident of the San Joaquín neighborhood near to the UPB campus, said he heard a loud noise in the early hours of the morning that shook the windows of his apartment and that he saw the aircraft pass "nearly clipping the top of the building". After this, he felt an tremendous explosion, he said.

Injured
The crash caused low-degree burns to five students of the univeristy who were transferred to the unversity clinic, located in the Robledo neighborhood.

The injured are:
Santiago Escobar Toro
Bryan Arroyave
David Pineda Moncada
Andrés Arboleda Maya
David Morales Barrera

The fatalaties are:
Pilot José Ignacio Sierra
Sargent Isaías Moreno Rojas
Soldier Juan Mota
Hugo Aldana
Juan Carlos Aldana
Juan Carlos Barajas

Since I translated the article, there are now 7 reported deaths; the five passengers and two sixth-grade students who were in a PE class on the field. The aircraft was a Cessna.

What a horrible incident. May they rest in peace...

I remember this place from my visit to Medellin last June.

Such a tragedy in such a beautiful city.

My best wishes and prayers to all those in Medellin

Quoting Avianca (Reply 3):

In the same El Colombiano article, there is a list of all incidents in Antioquia.

The Tampa 707 in '83 must have been horrific. To imagine a ferry flight with No. 4 inoperative and then No. 3 failing on climbout*... what an awful situation.
