Aircraft Crashes at UPB (Universidad Pontificia Boliviariana)
The accident involving a single-engined small aircraft, registered HK-2629,
left five people dead and six injured this Wednesday morning on the grounds of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB) in Medellín.
The accident occurred on the sports complex fields of the university, near to buildings which house primary and secondary level school programs.
The unfortunate incident occurred minutes after the aircraft belonging to a company named Nativa and piloted by 50 year-old José Ignacio Sierra took off from Olaya Herrera Airport destined for the municipalty of Ituango, located in the north of the department (Antioquia).
Metropolitan Police Chief, General Orlando Páez, indicated that the cause of the incident is unknown and stated that the weather conditions at the time in Medellín were perfect.
Nicolás Londoño, resident of the San Joaquín neighborhood near to the UPB campus, said he heard a loud noise in the early hours of the morning that shook the windows of his apartment and that he saw the aircraft pass "nearly clipping the top of the building". After this, he felt an tremendous explosion, he said.
The crash caused low-degree burns to five students of the univeristy who were transferred to the unversity clinic, located in the Robledo neighborhood.
