TPA Airport Airsides B And E Question

Thu Jun 08, 2000 9:19 am

I've noticed that Airside terminals B and E at Tampa are currently unused. In the old days Eastern used B, and Braniff, Republic, Pan Am used E.

Anyone out there know what's going on with B and E? Are there renovations being planned? Is there no one wanting to use them?

Airside E is going to be torn down and rebuilt as well is Airside B. I believe work on B has already begun. The main problem at TPA is where a new runway will be built, there is hardly any space left on the airport property.

I'll miss Airside E. One of my best spotting memories is a day spent at the tip on the south end of E in June of 1981 watching Braniff (ultra and two-tone), Republic, etc, as well as the action from rwy 18R/36L.

I haven't been to TPA myself, but have seen pictures of Airside E in particular which make it seem as one of the most unusual structures in aviation.

I don't think I've seen any other airside/terminal/concourse/pier that was like a bridge... with open air below the passenger waiting area.

From the photos, it also looks like there may be a lower level below the waiting area where the airbridge is... and I'm guessing stairs to connect them to the bridge above the actual gate. Can anyone who has been in Airside E confirm this or better yet have more pictures?

Airside "E" is being torn down and a new terminal is being built for Delta Airlines to move into. As far as airside "B", it was a terminal for Eastern at one time, however , now, I am not sure what is going to be done with the space.

As I recall, with Airside E, the waiting areas were upstairs, then after pax checked in for their flight, they would go downstairs for boarding. Very unusual design, but great for spotting!

Hey MarkTpa, is E actually being torn down as we speak? And is B still up, TPA's latest annual reports pictures show them both still around.

I'll be in MCO/TPA next month, so will get a first hand look.

BTW, major props to TPA for continually being voted among the top pax friendly airports in the US, and the world.

Airside E was still up a month ago when I was there, but the jetways are gone and it was stripped, ready for the wrecking ball. Airside B is in the same condition.
