Large Helicopters Do They Have Flight Attendants?

Fri Mar 31, 2006 1:00 am

Good day,

out of personal interest, do the large helicopter operators flying for example the Sikorsky 61 and 76 (for example to oil platforms) have flight attendants on them?

Thanks for any information!

Yes!
I used to travel from Malta to Gozo very regularly, on the Malta Air Charter MI-8s, and they had a single flight attendant on each flight. She would stand at the front with a joke of a mic and say the safety procedures, in fact one of them I had many good conversations with as I was travelling on average 5 times a week on those Mil MI8s, also got the tin tray seat a good few times in the cockpit Big grin

Ummmmm...an S 76 isn't that big of a helicopter, it only has 2 facing benches. But with respect to your question, under FAA rules, an aircraft with 19 or less seats does not need an FA. I believe its 1 F/A for every 50 passengers, starting with seat counts of 20 or more.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

Correct, I thought that might be just Part 121 Commercial Airline, but it's also true for Part 135 Taxi/Charter.

So, if the chopper has more than 19 seats - yes, it needs a F/A.

Why does it needs a F/A if there 19 seats, supposed only, say 5 people show up. Will F/A still need for that particular flight?

In the US, if I'm not mistaken, the requirement is based on increments of 50 seats installed in the aircraft, not increments of 50 pax... Therefore, if you have a 500 seat aircraft and 5 people you'll still need 10 flight attendants; if you have a 49 seat aircraft and 5 people show up, you need one flight attendant.

I think this requirement has to do with exit coverage in the case of an emergency.

Back in the 60s when I had an opportunity to fly on NY Airways between JFK and EWR there was a flight attendent on the V 107. She remineded me to pick up my flight bag that I had almost left behind.

The FAA rule is not one FA for every 50 passengers it is one FA for every 50 SEATS or part of 50 once you go over 19 seats. So on an aircraft with 100 seats and only 1 passenger you would still need 2 flight attendants.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

The S61 flights from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly have a flight attendant, further details on their website:

Yes, this would be right and if memory serves, this was the same for New York Airways' S-61s in later years.

I flew on an Air Greenland S-61 charter from Nuuk last year; it made two off airport landings. The female flight attendant (dressed in a one-piece flight suit) left the aircraft before engine shut down to check, and advise the captain (also female), that the helicopter was safely positioned on the uneven rock surface. If I did it correctly, there is a picture in my User Profile.

In 1980 I made a sightseeing flight on a KLM S-61N (PH-NZG). There was no flight attendant, but the co-pilot/loadmaster instructed/briefed the pax.
