Amazing 777 & 747 Crosswind Test Video!

Fri Mar 31, 2006 4:40 am

You have got to see these! It an amazing video of the 777 and 747SP under going their crosswind testing. Supposedly it takes place down in Brazil where they have some seriously fierce winds at this particular airport. Turn on your speakers too! They have the video set to some music by Enigma that makes it all the nicer! Enjoy! The last 777 landing is truly spectacular!

I've seen this many many times. It's still rather impressive.

Sorry for the off-topic but ... does anyone know the name of the background song? I've preview-listened to all Enigma songs on iTunes Store but couldn't find it.

T7 is a beauty! I really liked the last landing. What is the maximum crosswind that they can sustain during the landing?

Last landing looks like it may be auto-land. The 777 looks like it was here: http://www.boeing.com/commercial/techsvcs/boeingtech/bts_flita.html

One the first landing I think its a 777 what is that string thing hanging on the top of the rudder ?

I can get over how good this video is even though I have seen it umpteen time before ..... wish there was a higher resolution version of this - DVD even ....

Wow..those videos were amazing, thanks for the post.

Just asking, in a real life situation, would an airport still operate landings and takeoffs with such heavy winds? Would be quite a test on the pilots' skills.

its not a string; it is a small parachute on the tail to measure the forces acting up on the tail

Seen those many times but still can't get over them. Are there any other videos of crosswind tests? Would love to see videos of other widebodies in these situations during testing.

I never knew planes can fly that way! that was some serious crabbing love the video i can watch over and over and never get bored. Also, i wonder at the same time they are testing the engines if it will stall because of the crosswind taking to much air away from the inlets of the engines.

I think that Boeing was testing the 777 for this at some point -- I believe it's mentioned in "21st Century Jet," but I don't have that with me right now.

When landing in such a strong crosswind, do the pilots use anything other than a lot of rudder to straighten out after the rear wheels touch down?

Thanks,

I totally agree.
Good music can be an inspiration to many visuals.
In my case, the music used in the video is anything but.
Even though I have seen the cross wind video many times before, I downloaded this one for the first time, and when I dragged it to Final Cut Pro, the first thing I did was to delete the sound file.

I looked at the footage from the PBS 21 Century Jet series and the runway signage at Edwards AFB is the same. The mountains in the background match up very well. I'm also not aware of any flight testing done in Brazil. But i think there was some done at La Paz.

I've seen taht video here quite a number of times but it never get's old. I actually have a link on my desktop at home with much clearler pictures that are more realistic. I'll post it when I get home. According to some previous thread on this video, it's an advert for a flight school in Portugal. The song sucks though.

The airport is Casper, WY. CPR. Boeing has been using the airport for many, many years. Long runways, guaranteed stiff winds and very light traffic.

Great song "Return to Innocence" by Enigma from back in 1994 (about the same time the 777 was still in flight testing). A time where both popular music and aviation were much more interesting  Wink

This seems like an advertising for a Brazilian/or Portuguese flight school, doesn't mean it was filmed in Brazil.. and what about that 747SP? That's definitely like two decades before 1994. What would be the music that was probably playing in the background? Queen, the Beatles?  Wink

Thanks for the video. That was awesome. The Boeing 747 is a classic plane and the 777 is well on its way to also reaching the same evel of utiliy that the 747 has achieved. Anyone know what kind of crosswinds we are looking at here?
