SAS Expansion In China

Fri Mar 31, 2006 6:57 am

SAS is considering establishing a direct ARN - PEK as well as a possible CPH - HKG route. I find this interesting considering SKs constant cuts in long haul traffic. Rumors have it the CPH - HKG route might replace the old CPH - SIN route. I thus wonder if one still has to endure the stopover in BKK which SAS has on its SIN route. Anyway, this is good news for many Norwegians since flying Star Alliance to HK has usually meant LH, and for many Norwegians transferring through FRA is a pain since it means going via OSL or CPH first.

Yes this is great, I dont know of their plane situation, but I think they have to buy or lease new longhaul planes. On the other hand Lindegaard have stated that they could use there longhaul fleet, in a different way during winther and summer. But on the buttomline it seems like SAS is going back to 15 lounghaul airplanes, than the 11 they use today. Anyway it is nice to see that SAS is thinking to expand. Now that SAS International is into a black buttomline, if they don't want to loose all the traffic to Finnair it is the time to do so.

Unfortunately a possibilily. Haven't they decided to cut off the BKK-SIN part?

I would really like to see a direct CPH-HKG route. That would make me fly SK.

However they need quite a bit of O&D traffic to make the stopover in BKK reasonable, don't they? Or will the be able to obtain beyond fifth freedom rights to compete on BKK-HKG (which seem to be a quite competitive route anyway). For connecting *A traffic, FRA seems a better option without the BKK stopover.
Last flight: SAW-CPH on H9 on 02/11/09 - Next Flights: 23/12/09 CPH-AAL on QI, 30/12/09 CPH-LHR on SK, 19/01/10 CPH-CDG-

Why wasn't SAS able to make money on the CPH-HKG route the first time? Hong Kong is one of the most important and popular cities on Earth... were yields too low?

Perhaps ARN-HKG would be more viable, with attractive connections from Oslo...?

The reason for SAS pulled out from HKG was under the asian economy crises in 1997.

Wouldn't it make more sense if SAS flew to Shanghai instead of Beijing, since Air China already fly that route?
