Gate Checked Baggage - Usex

Sat Apr 01, 2006 2:27 am

I'm debating whether or not to take mainline US or a USEX flight. My question has to do with carryon baggage that may have to be gate checked. I have never flown on an RJ, so I don't know the procedure. The plane scheduled is a CR7 which US says is a Canadair Regional Jet, but doesn't get more specific. Does carry on baggage have to be gate checked with this plane, and more importantly, can I get the baggage back upon arrival. I would check the bag originally, but it would contain over 10k in gear and medical equipment that I cannot live without should the bag get lost. Thanks.

The policy is simple, if the bags fit in an overhead compartment, you can carry them on. If they don't, the gate agent will put a yellow tag on your bags so they may be reclaimed planeside at your destination. You're flying on a 70-seat CRJ or CR7. However, US Airways and US Airways Express don't supply oxygen containers for passengers on board. I'd double-check with US Airways if I were you. Hopefully you'll get the chance to fly, if not, thanks for checking.

Thankfully, I don't require oxygen, just what the air normally provides.

My bag meets the criteria set by US. Does the CR7 have normal overhead space?

Thanks!

No. To be more specific: It's better than the CR2 but I think not as good as the E170

Pretty sure a standard rollerboard bag will NOT fit in a CR7 overhead.

No, the bins aren't as tall. They are made for thinner briefcases and some smaller bags. Get with the gate agent and have them get a fragile tag in addition to the gate check tag. You'll drop it off on the cart right by the stairs and pick it right back up there at the end of the flight. The one nice thing about flying on a Barbie Jet if you ask me since you don't have the schlep your bag up and down the stairs ans small aisle.

It won't. My laptop backpack doesn't even fit. I have to shove it under the seat most of the time.

Thanks for all the info. Looks like it may be a CR9 instead. I guess its just as small and uncomfortable, but the flight times are way more convenient than mainline.

Since you have valuable equipment in your bag, my advice would be to MAKE SURE there is a yellow carry-on tag on your bag when you leave it at the end of the jetway. (even if you have to put one on yourself) Don't just assume one will be put on. The US agents are generally very, very good about this, but every once in a while, a bag will slip through. Upon arrival, if your bag does not have a yellow tag, you will have to claim it at baggage claim instead of planeside (a FAA requirement). This can be ugly if you are making a connection somewhere.

my $.02

Enjoy your flight!!
