Dash 8 Best Looking Regional

Thu Jun 08, 2000 3:59 pm

Bombardier Q series turboprops are awesome. The challenger nose and fusellage, slick engine nacelles and awesome tail arrangement, the whole design, makes saabs, Atrs, brasillias look very tasteless and bland to me

The Dash8's do NOT use Challenger nose and fuselage, that is the Canadair Regional Jets.

AC183, don't be so hard on Panther - he was probably trying to say how the Dash 8's nose resembles that of the Canadair CL 604 Challenger, the CRJ's ancestor! And I agree with Panther on this one.

The Dash 8 is my favorite-looking turboprop! Rugged and yet elegant, that's how I describe this turboprop. The Q400 is a neat one to look at. I've flown on the Dash 8-100 and -300 many, many times under Canadian Regional and AirBC, and it's not bad for an a/c in comfort and noise.

Ahhh, people of my own heart! I love them too! I agree
Samurai777 (hello again!)...go easy on the lad AC...anyone who says the Dash 8 is the most beautiful turboprop around is okay in my book!

Cheers!

My apologies if I came out harshly, my point was that even though both the Challenger and DHC-8 are made by Bombardier, they are actually different designs. In fact, the Dash8 and Challengers were originally made by different companies until they were bought by Bombardier. I am just saying that it's incorrect to assume they are developed from the same thing the way the ERJ's and Embraer turboprops were, they actually have different origins.

I have to agree...the Dash 8 series is great, both looks and comfort/performance, though I've only been on one once (a Q 200 I think...)

BTW: Are they still called DeHavilland Dash 8s, or is the proper name Bombardier Dash 8??

UGH... Sorry to be the sourpuss writing in on this topic but I love to hate the Dash-8.

Every time I fly on it (USAirways Express from CLE-PIT or ABE-PHL) it's loud, slow, and vibrates like crazy. The worst experience I had was when I flew on one where the airconditioning was broken and it was 90-degrees and 100% humidity outside...

The one redeeming quality it has is yes, it's pretty, but only at night when it looks like a flying pair of eyeglasses! Since the landing lights are right behind the turboprops, the blades get lit up and with the high wing, that's what it looks like to me.
Up, up and away!

I love Dash8 too !!!
Just look at my nickname........

So Panther you're joining the club heh? Welcome aboard. I fly the -311. Wonderful plane.
Reasonably fast, but you can still play around with it.
I just love zooming by the jets while appraoching the airport. While the heavies come in at 180 to 200 knots, we maintain 240 knots all the way to final !!!!!

I also flew the Dash8-400 simulator up in Toronto when I was there for recurrent training.
What Power !!!!!!! Rumaor has it that an empty -400 took of from Downsview and reached 25,000 feet in a little more then 5 minutes !!!!!!
The new cockpit is just amazing. Electric trims, glass cockpit...........the works.
I flew a circuit and before I knew it I was reaching 200 knots. Incredible !!!!!!

Anyways........long live the Dash8's !!!!!!!!!!

The 400 sounds and looks like a rocket. Are you guys looking into purchasing the 400, that would be really awesome. I'm looking into a position on the dash 8 311 of Bahamasair, I'm still building up my multi time. I have recently gotten time in a chieftain panther. I did 225 true @8500', faster than some turboprops out there. I guess it doesn't compare to a Dash 8.

I currently fly -311's for AirALM.
I think we're gonna stick to our -311's.
We're in the middle of company privatisation right now so it would be imprudent to make any big changes.
In these temperatures and at mid to high weights, the -311 will true at about 240 knots at 8500. Although we use reduced cruise power until 17000 feet. At max cruise you'll see it true at about 250 to 255 knots.
At 21000 it'll true at about 270 to 275 knots.

Xander

Personally. I think this regional turboprop looks pretty darn good.
