Im very happy - I actually stayed 3 more days in DAR to get the miles on my Eurobonus account. With the April LX welcome bonuses it adds up to more than 18k miles  Smile

Now that Swiss is a Star Alliance member any chance they will return to IAD. I realize that United flies to Zurich but I can still hope...

Since we're "hoping", I wish they'd fly SFO-ZRH, or restart PHL-ZRH.

Great to see LX in Star Alliance! More options to Central Europe!

Actually, since UA does IAD-ZRH, and LX does have JFK-ZRH, I doubt they'll need a PHL-ZRH run, but don't count out US once the A350s arrive. As for SFO, I've heard most Europe-SFO runs are very low-yielding, notice UA's discontinuation of SFO-CDG.

I had no idea LX were only officially joining the alliance on the 7th. Where does the confusion come from regarding the entry date being the 1st?

Swissair used to serve PHL, even when there were more U.S. - ZRH flights. US doesn't have to wait for the 350s as a 333 or 767 will easily make the trip. Actually I predict US will fly the route by summer 2007.

Maybe LX can negociate a codeshare with UA for that flight, with a possible equipment upgrade, if UA has aircraft to spare.

If I remember correctly SR's PHL flight was a tag on of the ZRH-BOS service. PHL service ended somewhere in the late 90s.

If ZRH gets a flight to PHL, then it will most likely be operated by US Airways and not SWISS.

It's one of the ex BA CitiExpress aircraft. They needed to repaint this one anyway- so they got the Star Alliance livery somehow for free.

BTW, as of today, former Swiss Travel Club members can book their flights on miles&more.

I have just checked my account and they have transferred all of my miles.

Personally, m&m suits me better (although that STC was a very friendly service) since I have a larger choice of flights.

SA ground staff seem to be struggling with Amadeus. Check-in is taking up a ridiculous amount of time. I am at JNB right now, on my way back home, and the domestic departures hall looks like a zoo. The Voyager FF mileage summaries is mucked up and I was just told that SA are only expecting the situation to stabilize towards the end of April.

This is wishful thinking, unfortunately. Swiss does not have enough long-haul aircrafts. When and if they get the two more they will increase the number of flights to destinations which are not going daily at the moment. And if they had capacity to (re)open new destinations it would be China long before YVR,

Interesting, as this morning (Apr 3) HB-JMH (A343) landed on time arriving from JNB (dep Apr 2). And all nine A332 were out on other longhaul flights.... Where did you obtain your information?

Yay!            SWISS is such a great airline. After Swissair went "belly-up", I was sad. I'm glad SWISS is now part of the Star Alliance, I think their routes will complement the Alliance very well. Their service is nothing less than fantastic!

Quoting Atwingo (Reply 7):

If I recall correctly, they only had one daily non-stop to/from IAD. Hmm, I don't know if they'd start servicing IAD again, maybe during the summer, perhaps? I would lean towards no though.

Side question:

Now that the Star Alliance is getting "stronger", does anyone have any predictions for other alliances such as "One World" or "SkyTeam"? Any possible new inductees there? The stronger the Star Alliance gets, the weaker the other ones get because frequent flyers and passengers who want to benefit from better connections, etc. would want to go with the Star Alliance, you know? I mean, UAL, LH, SQ, SAA, ANA, those are BIG  butthead  airlines to mess with!

I saw it on the D-apron at JNB yesterday and the plane definitely had only one engine on each wing.

SA7700,

could it be that it was a Turkish A330-200?

They are relatively new and seem to appear almost everywhere on their routes.

From a certain distance LX's and TK's liveries can easily be confused...

Not neccessarily. Who's the largest airline at LHR? BA. OneWorld. UA and LH do not have the presence at the world's most important international airport even with BD in Star Alliance. Latin America is not as strong with Star Alliance as it is with OneWorld and AA. Also, I wouldn't really consider SAA to be a "big" airline. Certainly a big player in Africa, but nowhere else. As for SkyTeam, it seems like every member that joins goes bankrupt (joke). SU is slated to join SkyTeam this year, but I haven't heard a specific date, because they're still working on compliance issues.

AA may have a strong presence in Latin America vis a vis flights originating from N. America....however, the Star Alliance, overall, still has a strong presence with flights originating from various points in the world. I was saying that compared to other alliances, Star Alliance seems to be the most well-rounded. Just IMO.

Turkish Airlines does not fly to JNB. I will re-check the JNB international arrivals-and departures log when I receive it at the end of the month. From where I was standing it definitely looked like an A332 - I may be wrong.  Smile

I agree very much indeed, it would be nice, specially also when trying to link up with some of the domestic flights in the U.S.
What I mean exactly is that it is my impression that where ever AA is hub, UA isn't and vice versa....(maybe not an accurate generalization) so when trying to connect to south and central America..form places like IAD, ORD DIA SFO (which I believe are UA strongholds) it is a pain in the ear because you are almost guaranteed to have to go through MIA and AA (which I really do not like at all!)
particles and waves are the same thing, but who knows what that thing is...

Sun Apr 09, 2006 12:36 am

Yesterday (April 7) the CEOs of all Star Alliance airlines met in Zurich to welcome Swiss as a new member. They had a little party in a hangar at ZRH with an AVRO painted in Star colors.
