What The Hell Is Happening Here? (Pic)

Sun Apr 02, 2006 3:46 am

Forgive me if i'm wrong, but in this pic it seems that the 747 is experiencing an EXTREME cross wind....yet no rudder correction? there isn't even a caption. it could it be taking off though...if i saw that i would certainly write a caption....its definately not taking off from a the taxi way and the runway under it is literally at a 45º angle....still no rudder.

The plane is taking off from the runway, which you can see a little bit of it underneath the plane.

Because of the camera angle, you are under the impression that the plane is at an angle to the RUNway.

after looking at it a little closer (well actually i realized this after i posted it and it was a thumbnail) it does look somewhat like an optical allusion of some sort.

looks a bit left to the centreline, but defintley an optical illusion

Looks like takeoff flap setting to me.
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

This is a normal takeoff (no crosswinds, etc). The runway is on a weird angle to the camera, thus causing the illusion that the plane is taking off from the taxiway. If you look closely, you can tell the plane is heading the same direction as the runway.

It appears to be an optical illusion. It is in line with the runway. What you are seeing...it appears to me...is an intersecting taxiway that give you the impression it is the runway. Follow the lines...

Its taking off along the runway, you can see the centre line (white) reflection alone the fuselage .

What you can see behind the aircraft is a taxiway, they have different color lines (yellow lead line).

That's actually the right-side runway boundary line...If it were the center line it would be dashed (not solid). But clearly the aircraft is lined up with the runway.

I would disagree, that would be 30m away from the centreline.

Below the aircraft are clearly visible two parallel solid white lines with a dashed white line between them. I think we all know what those lines represent.

The optical illusion is a nice one though.

okay, fine, but whatever it is, it's not the center line. What else could it beeeeee if it's not the boundary line? It's clearly solid!

Sorry. Maybe it's just me but I can't see how that's lined up with the runway centerline (or boundary line). I'd have to argue that the white line reflected down the aircraft belly is not associated with any runway marking. Can anyone explain this to me so I can understand it?

This shot looks to be taken from a car-park on the southern side of the airport along Matadero road...looking at taxiway Charlie-2. The trees in the background, that are between the airport property and the highway (TF375?), give further proof to the location.

From this point, runway 12/30 gets closer to as you proceed from left to right.

Using a telephoto lens distorts the angles and depth perception. The runway appears as only a slight angle in the picture when actually it is more like a 60 degree angle. As it is, using the runway striping as reference, the left side is only a smidge higher than the right.

From this Industrial area, the aircraft taking off from 12 do have a tendency to appear to be taking off directly at you; from 30, they appear going away.

With that being said, I will say this aircraft is crabbing somewhat in this picture, but nothing out of the ordinary, or nothing that would require corrective action from the cockpit. Something is going on as evidenced by the left wing being higher than the right.
With a lot of wide open space all around them, they could correct as they go, hence no visible signs of extreme control surface movements.

I would guess he is about 10-15 degrees off center.

OK, thanks Stirling. Still looks goofy to me, but I guess I'll just have to chalk it up to optical illusion.

What people need to realize is that the aircraft is taking off on the runway that has the while solid line under the aircraft near the bottom of the photograph. The illusion in the background is another taxiway not related to the aircraft in question. That is why there is an illusion.

I had to do a double-take on this one but once I realized what the real situation was it made sense.

Cheers,
John

As others have mentioned:

Taxiways: yellow lines

Runways: white lines

Great photo!

You know, I might cut you some slack, but your title was way too aggressive. Granted, we aren't little kids anymore, but if you're going to use that diction, try finding a justified reason. Mistaking the taxiway for the runway is a poor excuse. It's an honest mistake. But you took it too far with the title and blew it way out of proportion.

By the way, congratulations Aldana. Your photo is, if not already, destined to be the most popular on the site.

Alright, first post in awhile...

Stirling, thank you for a response that was useful and void of unnecessary intellectual egoism. To some others, when you have knowledge that others don't, you have a unique opportunity to share and diffuse that knowledge in a way that will be constructive to the knowledge of an individual and the aggregate knowledge of a group as a whole. That's a hell of a photo, and again, Stirling, thanks for a useful response!

Just look at the yellow taxiway lines. It's the angle of the photographer that's making it look strange. Nice photo by the way.

Hey, the plane is fighting against a crosswind, the flaps are set to 20 so for 100% its a takeoff. I have been to Teneriffa various times and ive been on exactly that aicraft once going to MAD. As soon as the plane lifted off I felt how the pilot was fighting against the crossiwind with the ailerons. And anyways TFN is known for its strong crosswinds, bein there on holiday i have experienced very windy conditions.

If you look on the belly of the 747, you can see the reflection of the runway centerlines  yes
