LAX Aircraft Maintenance

A few months ago, an AI 747-400M blew a few tires and was grounded for around a month. However, at LAX, all the people could do was get it airborne and fly it to SFO. While there, it was put in a hangar and the repair was completed.

My question is, why doesn't LAX have hangars to take 747s? I mean, CO, FedEx, AA, DL, and UA have maintenance bases at LAX, and none of them have a 747 sized hangar? I mean, come on, this is the world's 5th largest airport.
UA doesn't even have a hanger. Their maintenance base is just a bunch of DC-3 sized garages. Are their any plans for a new hangar in the future?

There are plenty of hangars at LAX and room aplenty for B747s. But, you have to have a business relationship (money) with the tennants of those hangars. Well, do you think AI had a deal there or decided that it was cheaper to ferry the plane to somewhere where they did?

LAX does indeed have hangars that can accomodate the B747. AA's 'Superbay' hangar can accomodate 4 simultaneously. The former TW (now AA/QF) widebody hangar can accomodate 2 simultaneously. CO's widebody hangar complex can accomodate a single 747. The UA hangar is a relic from LAX's past - this hangar site was AA's during the late 40s to mid 50s.

Many years ago, UA did indeed plan to construct a new hangar complex immediately west of CO's. I've heard that the project was scotched due to not passing environmental muster. Also, UA approached TW during the mid 90's (circa 95/96 IIRC) in seeking to purchase TW's hangar complex (and real estate at other airports). However, TW wanted to negotiate a purchase of the entire carrier and UA balked.

Carriers needing a hangar bay can rent space on an ad-hoc basis. UA and United Services (as AI contract maintenance provider at LAX) may have made the decision not to do this based upon the length of time required for repairs, and associated costs of renting the space. Or, the space made not have been available based upon the length of time the aircraft was anticipated being grounded.

Until recently Qantas only did very light line maintenance at LAX, however in January, they leased one bay in the ex TWA hangar and have begun doing checks on the B744s.

In addition to the previosly mentioned hangar facilities at LAX, Delta operates a maintenance base also with a widebody hangar, while US Airways also has narrow body hangar at LAX.

No, UA/Boeing did all the repair work at LAX, And it was grounded for nearly 2 months. It went to SFO only for finishing touches and re-certification. It was there less than a week.

But you can not repair a 747's landing gear with out lifting kacking it up in a hangar right? How would UA do that at LAX?

Most large UA stations have jack stands. We even have widebody jack stands up here in PDX.

She was suspended COMPLETELY off the ground for several days (saw it 1st hand) as Ramprat says...6 strategically placed jacks is all that's needed to do the job.

No prob. Don't feel bad, I was thinking the same as you when I saw the wing, fuselage spars exposed and serious internal work I was like 'wow' this certainly 'hangar time!' But no, the kept at..then the jacks in the last days- completely suspended off the ground-amazing! They're lucky not a single day of rain over the entire 50+ day period!

In the midst of all this we all forgot to mention the maintenance facilities Fedex have at LAX. Their widebody hanger can handle 3-4 DC-10/MD-11 widebodies at a time.

Flying Tigers had a large MX hanger right next to TWA. They also had the really great cafeteria.

Even if there was it is not always the best place to do maintenance...It costs a lot to rent a hangar...And i mean a lot...A few years ago we had to use a hangar at and airport to do an engine change....We paid 3000 a day...Plus 500 everytime we opened the door. If it was not winter we would have done it outside....This was for a 737-200.

I can only imagin what it costs to barn a 747.

It is owned by Fedex now. That hangar isn't large enough to house the whole aircraft though. The tails of the DC-10/MD-11's stick out.

A hangar isn't necessary to jack an airplane but level ground and light winds are. No wind is preferred.

Did DL have a pre Western hangar or building at LAX? I recall a building between Flying Tigers and TWA that had a Widget on it. I also recall a USAir plane sitting outside of it.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Another question is the area at the eastern part of the airport adjacent to the threshold of 25R still in operation IIRC ATI used to have some cargo op's there but Im sure that that area was fenced off last November when I was at LAX and the ATI's were parked with the Kitty Hawks next to the threshold of 25L.
If it has been closed off that area are there plans for development.

The fenced area you're referring to contained the now former Air Freight Building 3. That building had been slated for demolition for some time and is an element in a (re)development plan for the Century Cargo Complex.

Ultimately, that area will resemble a large hold pad, consisting of aircraft parking and some newer, larger cargo facilities.

The hangar to the right of the Fedex one is the US Coast Guard hangar. The one above that is the US Airways hangar.

News to me. Even if DL dumped its long term lease looks like they are still making use of the facilities. Just yesterday saw equipment and vehicles in/out of the widebody hangar, while the regular equipment and such parked outside the older narrow body hangars.

Although I'm not familiar with what it might be, we might have some agreement with LAX to use the facility on an as needed basis until they find a new long term tenant. I can assure you however that DL no longer has a lease on it. The tool room and all of the shop equipment have been moved to the line and other stations. We've received much of it in SLC. We are slated to get some more ground support vehicles from them in the next few weeks. So it's still in a transition phase and I don't doubt you saw the equipment there, but it won't be there much longer.
