Delta To Discontinue ROC Service For 2 Wks

Thu Jun 08, 2000 10:16 pm

On June 30, repaving will begin on the main runway ot the Greater Rochester International Airport. Airlines will have to use the shorter of the two runways. Most are changing equipment to suit the shorter runway. Rather than do that, Delta is simply stopping service. Hey, thanks a lot, Delta! We appreciate your committment to our market. I gues it's 25 year old 722s or nothing.

I find that rather odd that they would simply stop service. You would think they would shuffle one of their 737's to the ROC flights.

It happened here too 2 (3?) summers ago when they repaved the runway at HPN- all airlines stopped operations then. And guess what! During the work there were a record number of calls to the Airport's noise complaint hotline complaining about the aircraft noise!!

I wonder what planes will the other airlines be using for those two weeks. Runway 28/10 is only 5500 feet compared to 22/4 being 8000 feet. I don't know if 28/10 could handle a 727 or even 737-100 or -200.

Hey LHMark, this is the former "PH-BZA" under my new name. Do you know what airlines are also stopping service? This is quite a disappointment. What other airlines are pulling jet service from ROC temporarily?

Delta pulled the 727 off the route due to the shorter runway. Yes, a 727 could legally land there in good weather. However, during bad weather it may not be. Delta switched to the smaller Delta Connection aircraft to avoid inconviencing passengers in case of bad weather.

All other airlines are continuing service with equipment appropriate to runway 28/10. I'll be out there hoping to catch sight of some rare (for ROC) birds. Bad weather is always a concern in this crummy city, but it's not much of a testament to the flexibility of DL's fleet if they can only field an "all or nothing" aircraft like those 722s.

I know that, from an economic standpoint, Delta would prefer not to lose the revenue, risk pissing off passengers by cutting off service. Too bad it worked out this way. Hopefully, Comair can pick up the slack. Those Delta 727s hopld a TON of people, and we're all eager to get out!

Thanks.

Anyhow, can a 733 or a DC-9/MD-80 handle the shorter runway?

DET has a 5100-ft runway, and Pro Air flies 733/734's out of there. Southwest used to fly 733s (?) out of DET as well.

Hopefully they fix all of the broken navaids, etc. for 4/22.. reading the notams, you'd think ROC was in Beirut or something....
Ask why..
