Still does not justify ALPA putting 50000+ out of work!

If management offered pilots a new pay rate of $10/day, and then the pilots went on strike and "put 50000+ people out of work", who would you blame then?

Let's be realistic. They will be averaging about $300 per day for the entire year in which they will work 200 days and have 165 off. That's after the pay reduction. Pretty good work if you can get it. Am I missing something?

You're not missing a damned thing.

Except a reasonable attitude towards people that make more money than you do, apparently.

Right...the point I'm making is that the line separating "realistic" from "unrealistic" is subjective, and not for any of us to decide.  Wink

The other thread than ran off the bottom of the page yesterday was over 100 posts long and these people still didn't get the fact that the pilots or the management will settle this, but they still continue to spew BS about how there are 50,000 employes, blah blah blah.

Well guess what: 10% of those employees have been abused and they've had enough. The other groups should create a union so they can stand up to management as well.

With all due respect, Delta ALPA has done its share of abusing. In this dispute, neither side has a monopoly on moral correctness.

Well...I'll give you credit...you beat me to saying it! The shit-slinging and threats has been going on over there for quite a while.

It is amazing that you have two airlines, NW and DL, who entered bankruptcy on the same day. Both of the airline's respective ALPA chapters are facing similar struggles with their repsective management. Yet only NW ALPA has made any progress, while DALPA continues with the mud-slinging, despite being told by the arbitration board to rachet down the publicity. Really paints a contrarian picture of the level of maturity between two different chapters of ALPA.

So what exactly is the general consensus on the issue? Does anyone at DL have any idea as to whether or not the pilots will vote for a strike?

Well, I say by April 20th we will all know the outcome. If DL pilots do go on strike, I and many others will be re-booking as fast as I can dial my phone on other airlines. Its pretty much granted by both sides that a strike will spell the end of Delta. I wonder how long it will take to get my money back on my tickets I purchased in advance if they liquidate?

Bingo-It's a 2-way street. The market will bear what the market will bear. No reason to be emotional about it. The pilot's will either take what management gives them, not what they think they deserve, or they don't, they strike and they'll be unemployed. No skin off management's nose as most will easily find similar paying jobs. Now that's called leverage. Don't get mad at the messenger.

I don’t envy the pilots their decision in this. It is important to make sure you are not walked on, but where do you draw the line? Is $100000 ok when you’ve been making $120000? How about $80000 or $70000? The median US family income for 2002-2003 was $43318, http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/...archives/income_wealth/002484.html, so people can get along with less. When is too much too much? How do you vote for a strike when you know you are basically putting yourself out of a job? The airline business is in bad shape, so where do you go to get a similar paying job? I know a lot of the guys have engineering degrees, but most haven’t used them and they aren’t going to find a job that pays any more than $60000-$70000. Management has to know that they can only push so hard or they will force a strike. Hopefully people on both sides of the equation work things out.

Best wishes,
F86sabre
