General Codeshare Questions

Wed Apr 05, 2006 2:37 am

Years ago, codeshares meant that a carrier bought seats in bulk from another carrier and marketed them for re-sale. But could some of you insiders shed some light as to the mechanism of codeshares in this day of massive alliances. For example, if I buy a DL ticket for a biz-class ticket from BOS to CDG on an AF aircraft, what does DL have to give AF, what does it get to keep?

And if there is a mix of carriers, ie. DL (or any other carrier) takes a passenger on its aircraft to a city where the passenger connects to another carrier (like KE or OK etc.) how do they determine the fare split?

The answer is simple - it depends.

There are lots of different type of code-share arrangements ranging from seat purchase to free-sale. In a free-sale arrangement the airlines have either agreed on fixed amounts per passenger (per cabin, fare type, etc. etc.) or have agreed that the operating carrier will get what the marketing carrier would have got (had they used their own metal) less an interline service charge.

Is there any way to know what arrangements apply where? No! Should you care? Well that is a more interesting question.
