RFD Traffic Up 7.2 %

Wed Apr 05, 2006 7:55 am

According to the Rockford Register Star, RFD's traffic was up 7.2% in the first quarter. Mainly due to the added frequency with Allegiant, but that's still a great sign.

I am not sure it is such a great sign. RFD has gained Allegiant which seems to be a healthy little airline wtih growth opportunities, but it also lost Hooters. Hooters was a risky airline to begin with.

I expect growth to continue into the next quarter with UA's flights to DEN. Rockford lost Northwest, but replaced it with United, so that is about an even trade. Hooters and Transmeridian are gone, but have been replaced on some of the same routes with Allegiant.

Overall I think it is a draw. The only thing that RFD can't sustain is more airline turnover. Airlines succeeding and failing isn't really good for an airport. The only reliable air carrier at the airport seems to be UPS.

The UA service has been doing very very well in terms of loads. I have no idea how the yields are, but every time I check the flights they are at least 80% booked and many times overbooked in both directions. I wouldn't be surprised if they added more frequency or decided to add some mainline service to DEN. I wonder if IAD would be a possibility.

UA service is doing great. IT is far above UA's expectations. It would be great to see another flight or even explus. I'm not sure how IAD would do though. I don't see it as doing well as DEN, but that is just my opinion. It would be great if UA added IAD though.

I'd love to see a CR7 or E170 on the route. I am tempted to fly the route and am sure I will over the coming months, but I can't say that I am eager to get on a CRJ. Economy plus and first class definitely make regional jets so much nicer.

I agree with you RoseFlyer. E+ would make that flight much more enjoyable, even it is on a CR7. I doubt they would put the route on the E170, but that would be great if so. I'm flying it in a couple of weeks and I have many friends who have already flown it and enjoyed it. Small aircraft, but they get their miles and drive 10 mins to get to their flight.

Well maybe something to LAX would help with the west coast connections.

Still would love to see them do something in to Florida.

Well they use DEN for the west coast connections. They are looking for east coast connections now. And they would love to see something happen with Florida too. Allegiant said they are very, very happy with the service at Rockford, and are in talks with expanding it. United's flighs were 89 percent full outbound in March and are already 80 percent full in April.

Let's hope something happens soon.

Wow that is impressive. It looks like United is doing a good job on the route. Their fares certainly seem more reasonable than Northwest. I looked at flying NW a few times, but they were always more expensive than going through ORD.

I always felt UA would have a better chance of succeeding in RFD versus NW since RFD is in UA's home base back yard. They can probably draw a number of loyal United flyers from the NW suburbs of Chicago who might find RFD more convenient to get too versus getting to ORD.

What I think is more impressive is that RFD is the #3 station in the Allegiant network. FATFlyer or ATCRick....do you guys have the ranks of stations for Allegiant? RFD guys must be doing something right to get the butts in the seats.

I think the presence of ORD and frequent flyers will help RFD. However one thing people often forget is that the population of Rockford and its surrounding suburbs (Belvidere, Loves Park, Cherry Valley) is over 200,000. That is certainly a decent sized population to support flights on its own. RFD wants to market itself as a Chicago alternative, but it is a decent sized city in its own right and is the second largest metro area in Illinois. Yet cities like Bloomington, Quad Cities and Champaign/Urbana have been more successful at getting air service since they are farther from ORD. But the drive on a busy afternoon can take over two hours to get from Rockford to ORD.

It was from the second article:

"The gains came largely from Allegiant’s increasingly busy service, which grew from 8,958 in January to 12,278 in March. According to the Las Vegas-based airline, the Rockford airport was the company’s third-busiest in March among the 40 it flies from, including those in cities such as Cleveland; Des Moines, Iowa; Fargo, N.D.; Green Bay, Wis.; and St. Louis. Rockford trailed only Allegiant’s destination airports of Las Vegas and Sanford, Fla., outside Orlando"

I still think they meant to say Toledo, instead of Cleveland  Wink

Yeah bellville, but the airport is called St Louis Mid-America. So calling it St. Louis in the article isnt entirely wrong as Toledo vs Cleveland.

WOW! 7.2 percent. And that would be what, 7.2 increase from what number daily, 200, or maybe 300. If that is the case, Rockford generated another 15 or 20 passengers a day. That is remarkable.

I don't. It would take me a while to assemble the numbers and rank them since I'm outside. Given how fast G4 keeps changing and growing it would outdated before I was done.  Wink

And the airport isn't even that close to Belleville, it's in Mascoutah.
