Do you think the much rumoured ADD-ACC-USA flight will be introduced with it?

Thanks FCKC very interesting that they take 2 x 744 as an interim measure until the arrival of the 787s.

Most likely to be deployed on LOS/BKK/China routes, as ET needs additional freight capacity on these. This one has been rumoured for a while now, and indicated ex-MH 744-combis as being what ET was after.

Yay for ET!

There are no MH 744 combis in its current fleet. They got rid of them in the early-2000s. The two aircraft in question have been sitting in MZJ for a few years.

Still I am surprised at this decision.

Nice news! And we will soon have a new (temporary) 744 operator in Africa, nice  Smile

I am surprised ET is taking the 744 as a temporary solution for their newly ordered 787, isn't that a bit too much of a capacity increase coming from only two aircraft? Isn't it difficult to plan two aircraft which will later be replaced by five aircraft (5 787s)?

In any way, I am glad to see the 744 wearing another airline livery and good luck to ET of course  Smile

Will ET be convering these B 744s of MAS into Combis or will they use them as an all pax version aircraft?

They would make more money of them if flying in a Combi version...its worth the initial investment in converting it into one as it will come in handy on the FRA, China, BKK, DXB, LOS, JNB and LHR route.

Wow, I never expected that. Being a long time Ethiopian fan (just look at my username), this is great news, almost better than them getting their 5 787s. I think they need the capactity, their current 757 and 767 isn't quite big enough probably, especially for Cargo. In ADD their working on a cargo terminal, so I wouldn't be suprised if cargo played a big role in the decision. Maybe we'll see a 747 is AMS with flowers (jk).

Surprise, surprise. Who have Ethiopian on their list? Seems strange that they´ll go for jumbos while waiting for the much smaller 787. But who knows, if they have routes that can fill 747s and that really make money, then maybe in the future they even go for a few 747-8Is, especially as technically seen they would go very well along with the 787.

I agree that with the bulk of the 747 in mind the old livery would have been nicer to look at.

Wonderful news.

I heard the same rumors a couple of weeks ago from an ET employee. I am almost sure it's for the ADD-ACC-USA route.

WHat is the layout of the MH 744. Do they have PTV and in which classes.

Anyway great news.

I doubt they would have taken 767's but I could have maybe seen a T7 in their somewhere ?

Are leased/used 777's hard to come by ? I think ET are on the road to great things....

I can confirm that the 747's will be used initally on the ADD-LOS and ADD-DXB sectors, two of our busiest routes and especially on the ADD-DXB route it will allow us to free up 2 aircraft as we currently fly a 767-300 and 757-200 one hour apart on this busy route!

There are no plans as yet (in the summer schedule) for the 747 to operate anywhere else yet but there are rumours ADD-LAD and ADD-BZV-FIH-ADD may use the 747 during busy times

I think that it will become a combi and they are due to start flying on June 4th on the LOS and DXB routes

763s are hard to come by these days and if they are available out there their average monthly lease rate is around USD 550,000.00 according to Airline Business recent article on aircraft financing. The search for the 772ER also did not go well as all lease T7s are placed with customers. ET will most probably deploy the 744 to LOS, LAD and the asian destinations like HKG, CAN, BKK and BJS.

Cheers!

I remember flying them back in 1974 aboard 720's & 707s and marvelling at the collor scheme. If they could just bring it back for the 744s they would have the hottest 744s in the sky.

Combi in a 744 is where the last third (usually) of the main passenger deck of the plane is used for freight. This is accessed via a large rear freight door.

As a separate note, this is no longer allowed into the U.S. Passengers and (heavy) freight are not allowed on the same deck (U.S. FAA ruling).

They still would have a lot excess capacity.

ADD-DXB is about 3:45 / Currently departs ADD late afternoon.
ADD-LOS is about 5:30 / Currently departs ADD morning.

One aircraft could sufficiently make both destinations within a 24-hour day, and that is assuming they would operated daily.

Will one of these 744s be a full-time spare aircraft?

Combis are allowed into the US- their rumored ban is a result of someone misinterpreting FAA requirements.

You can see combi configured 747's every day at LAX with KLM and a few times a week with Air China and sometimes EVA and Asiana.

I'm surprised that we're not hearing of more new 744 orders from airlines like ET and KQ, or other airlines for which a new 744 would be a very nice upgrade that can be gotten for slightly more than cost right now.

any of these types of orders going out soon or is the 744 order line done?

 Wink

Seriously, when does this start in June? When do they actually take delivery?
Wondering about the proving period....this is the first time ET has operated a 747 series aircraft?
What about LOS? I am still seeing only the daily 763....

Will ET be getting both 744s at the same time, or one at a time, hence the DXB schedule being the only route loaded?

So it looks like for now they are going to keep them close to ADD so they can acclimate themselves to the new aircraft? Then later on down the line send them to farther flung destinations.
I ask this, because the utilization, as I have already mentioned, is way too light to warrant 2 very expensive aircraft. Don't you think?

In general, too much capacity and lack of commonality with other types in already small fleets. It is better to have more of the same aircraft, even if somewhat smaller.

I think the 744s are still too big for these two carriers. They are barely operating dailies on some routes. What they need is more range in the 763-capacity, which is why they have both gone for 78s.

Both Lagos and Dubai are operated daily. So that's one aircraft. Luanda is operated 2x per week.

Arne't those 747-400s kind of old? Do they really have IFE and good seating? How about business class? I think ET's current business class is lousy.
