YYZ To Be A380 Ready By January '07

Thu Apr 06, 2006 1:56 pm

An article published in the April addition of "Pearson Today", the publication of the GTAA states that as part of Pier F of the new Terminal 1, 2 gates will be constructed capable of handling the A380. The original plan did not call for these gates to be built but the arrival of this aircraft sparked changes by the GTAA. Also stated in this article is United Airlines will move there operations into Terminal 1 in January 2007.

But who is planning on flying them in the near future? Most of the N.American routes of 380 will be LAX,SFO,JFK,Montreal (from AF), and MIA. Anyhow nothing wrong in being prepared.

Do I remember correctly that YYZ has the highest landing fees in the world? Or is it a taxes thing? I think this has been discussed on this forum. If true, some airlines might want to consider that and minimize their YYZ flights, hence using the A380.

Anyway, any new gate / terminal in any major global airport (and YYZ definitely is) has to be A380-compatible. The future will include the A380, get used to it!
When I doubt... go running!

Considering that all international carriers except AC and its Star partner LH fly from Terminals 2 or 3, having a pier at T-1 A380-ready doesn't seem very big news.

I agree, it does seem odd, but I'm sure once the international section of T-1 is open, a few airlines will move from T-3..

My guess/hope is that we'll see Korean Air bringing the 380 here, and IF British Airways gets some, they too.. And maybe Fedex??
I like British Airways! I'm not sure why, but I do! ;-)

Well, only SQ will even have them by Jan 07, so YYZ is way ahead of the game.

LH is pretty much the ONLY airline we're supposing will bring it in, due to the fact that the landing fees will only go up as Ottawa wants more and more rent from us.

checkmark  checkmark  checkmark  All 3 Canadian gateway airports needed to plan for as many 380's as they thought they would get. We have prospects of it from several carriers, so we put in a couple of gates. ADM knows AF is flying it there, so they built a gate for it. I don't know what YVR has done/is planning to do.

Sorry, but for international flights, T1 is AC & their codeshare partners/Star Alliance's terminal (there are exceptions like Etihad) until T3 closes (~2050). When the T3 expansions open next year it will be a lot less crowded in there for all the other airlines.

"currently there are 21 airports ‘A380 ready’ a number it expects to double by the end of 2007, and which will reach 63 by 2010."

Considering that YVR is building an extension to the international building anyway, and that the 2010 Olympics will cause a surge in traffic, it would seem odd not to make 1 or 2 gates 380-ready, I think...

Austrian and Alitalia also use T1.

The T3 Expansion Project will add an additional 40 Check-in Counters at the east end of T3. It will also add an additional customs area, and another luggage carousel (IIRC). This will open in just over a month.

On the west end, they have reconfigured Gate B9 & B10 to accomodate larger aircraft.

This was done to relieve some of the congestion in T3.

I don't see LH bringing the A380 into YYZ. Pearson is a busy, but not what I would consider a capacity constrained airport. YYZ-FRA flights are generally packed, and I could see LH adding a supplemental flight (double-daily) to tie in with a set of un-banked connections. I can see a departure in the 2300-2359 range ex YYZ. Ideally a dayliner flight would be great, but don't see such a service happening before key US cities (NYC/ORD/BOS).

Yes everyone in Ottawa (as citizens, we all collectively decide this) wants more from Toronto, lol. Seriously though, the Tories have said the airports should be rent-free. Let's see if they'll follow-through with this.

YOW will be A380-ready to handle diversions and any VIP gov't. A380 that might someday be ordered. The terminal will not be able to handle a 380 (747s will still be the largest), but there will be airstairs if ever needed. The adjustments to YOW are quite minimal. All that's required is to paint some new lines on the taxiways.

Just to clear up some possible confusion here, the T3 Expansion opens in June, but it will not add any baggage carousels until next year as the existing baggage claim area/customs undergoes renovations. At least that's the latest info I have; the data doesn't exactly flow freely between my department and T3 management.

Yes we all know YYZ is in such a bad shape because of Ottawa...... maybe
GTAA can use it for some advertising in the future......

Sure LH would be one of them.

That's hardly any basis for planning.....airports are planned keeping in mind needs for the next 20 years or so.....the picture may be very different once the 380 proves itself and a lot of other airlines start flying it....
