Potential Of UA MSY Focus City

Fri Apr 07, 2006 3:24 am

Now I know they just annouced SAT as a focus city, but things are getting sort of interesting with UA down here in New Orleans.

As of May, UA and/or UA Express will fly nonstop to: ORD, DEN, LAX, OKC, SAT, STL, and IAD. Service to SFO is expected to resume in the Fall.

UA currently has 3 gates, and has the chance to get two to three more easily, since Concourse C here is so underutilized now, now that F9/TA/B6 are either gone or, in the case of B6, moved to a different terminal.

I don't forsee a huge hub or anything, but I can easily see something along the lines of what they are doing in SAT....point-to-point nonstops to underserved markets with some connecting oppurtunities available.

It's interesting to note that UA now schedules a connection through MSY on its IAD-OKC and IAD-SAT routes.

With the somewhat strange addition of a new flight to STL in May, it would seem that UA may be seeing an oppurtunity in New Orleans.

Any thoughts?

Nah, as far as i'm concerned, we were all in it together!  Wink

PS - Additional Sunday-only LAX flight starts in May...and the regular LAX flight gets upgraded to a 320 westbound.

Any idea of when/if WN is planning to resume BHM-MSY flights? I'm shocked that some haven't been added back already.

Does WN currently offer MSY-BNA? If not, this would be a great route for UAex, along with OKC-BNA

Off topic, but what concourse does B6 now operate out of? Are they back in D?

Whose left in C besides UA, AA, and FL?

Do you know how many flights is UA planning to operate out of MSY?

I have no idea. I'm very surprised that they haven't brought at least two or three back already.

Yes, two daily 735's.

B6 is operating out of gate D2, which was a former DL gate.

It's just UA/AA/FL on C.  Sad

UA will have 13 flights a day as of May.

320 only westbound? How do they manage to swing that? I am guessing the Sunday is a United Cruises feeder. What are they planning on flying? Also, what is with the 757 subs from DEN lately?

They have been squeezing into D2

The LAX flight routes IAD-MSY-LAX (and vice versa). They are upgrading the IAD-MSY-LAX flight....return stays a 319.

The new Sunday-only will be a 319.

The DEN 757 operated for a period of about three weeks due to high loads...it's a 320 now.

They need that 757 coming from LAX

Looks like things are returning to normal. At least one of the LAX flights used to do the same thing.

You can also pick schedules where an OKC connection is available from DEN/ORD to SAT/MSY and back.

I am wondering how much more potential there is around the country for the these types of focus cities like those that have sprouted up in SAT and MSY?

Dayton?
Omaha?
Sacramento?
Oakland?
Jacksonville?
Richmond?
Birmingham?
Louisville?

Wouldnt any MSY focus city be operated by TransStates, who would take all the risk and use the UA brand?

Off-topic, but effective May 2, NW adds an additional flight from both DTW and MSP. Both flights arrive late in the evening, overnight, and fly out the following morning.

The plan we have involves a lot more United/Ted mainline, as well as a mix of RJs and turboprops to feed a focus city/mini hub. At this point, the market, yields and excess traffic are all there to do it, it is just a matter of United pulling the trigger.
