Would DL Failure Affect Skyteam Alliance

Fri Apr 07, 2006 10:23 pm

Here's another question, if DAL failed, would the Skyteam Alliance fail as well?

I would highly doubt that.

Since Skyteam has two other U.S. major airlines in it's alliance the effect would be minimum.

This point is probably mute because I agree with alot of other people on A.net that DAL and it's pilots will come to terms with some kind of agreement.

It would certainly have it's impact, but it won't be the end of SkyTeam.

If, and that is a very big if (I believe that Delta, just like United and US Airways, will be able to transform) Delta will fail, the other SkyTeam airlines (AF-KL, AZ, KE as the most important to them) will channel way more passengers through NW and CO. AF-KL and DL will ask for anti trust immunity with NW and problably get it, and in the end it will work out. There will be some upset passengers as they will be rerouted, etc, etc. But it won't be the end of SkyTeam; the alliances are that big that they can survive something like this.

Right now I'd have to say SkyTeam is the shakiest of all the alliances right now. If DL went down I don't think it would last, even if NW went down I think it would be in big trouble. Both OneWorld and Star Alliance are interested in any and all the players in this alliance if it were to crack in any way.

oneworld already has some hefty regulatory concerns currently. I couldn't see the federal regulators allowing oneworld to have any of SkyTeam's major carriers. Even if DL goes down, CO and NW would take up the slack. This is not even considering what CO would do if DL liquidated. Someone will try to fill the void DL left in the southeast and east coast. It will be a race between CO and AA, IMO.

I cant think Oneworld or *A would be at all interested in AZ or KE, nor would they want CO or NW. As to whether they would be allowed to join with CO or NW (or DL) well all three operate within one alliance at present, *A has multiple US carriers, so not sure there is a logical argument to decline 2 US carriers in Oneworld. Oneworld cant secure any anti trust immunities at present so that wouldnt be a factor, they still wouldnt get it, no change there

Maybe CO would be interesting to Star, but the truth is that the discussion of which airlines would be courted by Star Alliance and oneworld is useless. Should DL fail, SkyTeam still has 2 major U.S. carriers that would compensate for that. As a last resort, if Sky felt that DL's demise is such a strong blow, they can always go after AS.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Interesting posts - but I have the opposite opinion: should DL fail (and we are all hoping that they do not close down), SkyTeam should really have no problem going forward. SkyTeam has three US airlines as members: should DL fail, CO and NW would continue providing presence in the US (one must also assume that if DL should fail, CO and NW would expand their flying in some way on both domestic and international routes, and if DL would fail, NW would quickly get itself out of bankruptcy); CO already has a strong presence on trans-atlantic services that would indirectly replace DL, same on Latin American routes, and DL is not a key player in the Pacific.

There of course would be many issues to resolve, with one airline replacing the other on certain routes and code-share deals being re-written, but I do think that SkyTeam would go forward.

As I said, lets hope that it does not happen.

I don't think that DL will go down ( hopefully my saying that has not put the kiss of death on DL ) but even if it did Skyteams coverage to/from and within the US is not a problem with both NW and CO providing Europe / Asia and Central/South America .

Skyteams current membership is actually a bit topheavy in North America anyway - DL/AM/CO/NW - that is 4 out of the current 9 members - with another 4 in Europe KL/AF/OK/AZ - the main problem for Skyteam is it's lack of coverage outside these areas - I am aware that some of these problems are going to be fixed with new members and associate members - KQ in particular filling a huge gap - but I can't help feeling that Skyteam needs a lot more balance in it's membership before it loses its "who?" status in much of the world
