Shanghai Airlines To Join Star Alliance

Sat Apr 08, 2006 6:57 am

Shanghai Airlines is to join the Star Alliance - The Airline Network For Earth.

Vasing Kittikul, executive vice president of Thai Airways International leaked the information at the Star Alliance SWISS celebrations in Zurich.

-----
"Shanghai Airways will be one of the airlines to fill up the white spots," Visang said, declining to give details of talks with companies in other regions.

Thai Airways already works closely with the Chinese carrier, as well as the Beijing-based Air China, Visang said.

"I'm going to visit Shanghai Airways at the end of this month to talk about domestic flights in China," he added.

Maybe FM may start intercontinental flights in the near future? Perhaps PVG-FRA or PVG-LAX?

Shanghai Airlines deserves a "fast growing" label. A future major leaguer.

Plus they have the final 757.  Smile

Having flown FM, I think this is a smart move. They are a great airline that can fill in the gaps of the network.

Yes, great news hearing that Star Alliance is expanding. And is this not the first Chinease airline to join a major alliance?

I believe it is. In theory, China Southern is in talks with SkyTeam, but I don't think they have an agreement yet.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Chine Southern only signed MoU with SkyTeam some time ago. I heard that the plan of joining had been postponed indefinitely for some reason.

Any idea if FM will join as a regional member or not? If yes, who will be the sponsor? I am thinking NH. And what about their FFP?

interesting that they dont mention middle east (MS or QR ?) or central america (TA ?) as 'white spots'

"We continue to discuss the advantages of the alliance with other carriers where we have what we call 'white spots', or parts of the globe where there are opportunities to improve service, such as China, India and Russia," Jaan Albrecht, the chief executive of Star Alliance, told reporters.

Albrecht, speaking at a ceremony here to welcome the alliance's latest member, Swiss International Air Lines, did not identify the carriers involved or give details of the status of negotiations.

"Don't expect us to make an announcement here and now. But believe me, we are weeks away from an announcement, not months," Albrecht said.

perhaps TG ?? see below

Vasing Kittikul, executive vice president of Thai Airways International -- one of the five founding companies of the Star Alliance -- later told AFP that the Chinese company Shanghai Airways was set to join.

"Shanghai Airways will be one of the airlines to fill up the white spots," Visang said, declining to give details of talks with companies in other regions.

Thai Airways already works closely with the Chinese carrier, as well as the Beijing-based Air China, Visang said.

I know - kind of sad when you quote your own post quoting someone elses words ... but I am interested in the 'white spot' that is Russia .. I can only assume that since SU is taken by Skyteam that Star must be trying to get Transaero - not really an airline I know anything about other than having seen a ( very attractive from both genders ! ) Transaero crew recently when passing through KUL ... and that they inherited NZs old 747-219s ( from VS the first 'secondhand' owners of them ) .

Anyone know more about them ... or have any other ideas for a potential Star Russian airline ?

Rumour has it that China Southern will gain entrance in Skyteam in October 2006. This has not been confirmed though.

IIRC SibirAir was being looked at as a potential Star Alliance partner.
