Alitalia $33 From North America To Cyprus!

Sat Apr 08, 2006 10:41 am

At least for a while in business class!

Taken from AA's employee's newsletter:

---$33 BUCKS TO CYPRUS, FOR A WHILE---
Alitalia briefly sold $33 round-trip tickets Wednesday between North America and Cyprus after two "zeros" were dropped from the fare in a clerical mistake. The fare was supposed to be entered into airline reservations systems at a price of Canadian $3900, but dropping the last two digits resulted in a fare that was the equivalent to U.S. $33. The $33 fare was only good for travel in business class. Alitalia will honor 509 of the $33 tickets purchased and ticketed before it suspended reservations.

Damn! missed it!

It happens all the time; it's nothing new. a.net isn't probably the best site to get the latest new re: incorrect fares - one should check out flyertalk for all the relevant dicussions. I could have booked, especially with me being out of YYZ, but decided to pass.... Did the same with YYZ-HNL for equally insane fare...

Well the best real fare I ever saw was 20pounds from LHR-AMD but $33 is dirt cheap, cheapest business class flight ever!

Wow, that's awesome that they are honoring the mistake, are they required to do so?

Actually, they weren't at first. I know people who bought 2-3 of these things who already had tickets on the way who had their reservations cancelled out (reinstated later). Airlines can cancel within 24 hours for pretty much anything.

JFK-LCA for $33? I usually end up paying over $1,000! Wish I'd seen the fares while they were still around. Damnit! And I'm looking to go to Cyprus this summer...

Thanks for the info anyway.

Depends on local laws in the country where the ticket is sold. In the Netherlands for example, companies are not required to sell an item for an advertised price in case it is an obvious mistake. If KLM would offer a business flight AMS-YYZ for EUR 33 instead of EUR 3300, they would not be obliged to honor it, as it is an obvious mistake and the buying party should know that. If they'd advertise it for EUR 2300 instead of EUR 3300, they would be obliged to sell it for that price, as that does not look like an onvious mistake.

Don't know that laws in other countries, though.

A mistake such as that allowed me and my boyfriend to fly the Concorde JFK-LHR-JFK for US$349 back in 1998.

When I rushed to purchase the ticket to a counter, the sales clerk gasped, looked nervously around, consulted with the manager, who gasped, looked nervously around, and finally made the decision to honour the fare. By the time I left the ticket office, every employee who could was trying to book tickets for themselves in the Concorde.

Oh, quite a treat...

I once saw SEA-LHR via CPH on SK's website for $92. I wonder if this was a mistake also?

 Big grin

509 tickets? How many sold-out aircraft business sections is that? I can see their smiling faces already!

I heard that AZ initially reneged on the bookings, and that it eventually followed through. At any rate, I would have gone for it had it been anywhere close to where I wanted to be Big grin What would I do in LCA?

Just in case anybody read this and thought Alitalia were good guys for honouring this they originally cancelled most bookings (including mine) then reinstated them completely changing the fare rules, eliminating any stopover in Italy and in many cases changing travel dates. The fares are now not changeable as per the fare rules on booking and any call to alitalia yields a very rude person on the other end.

Getting all this straightened out is costing AZ much more than it would have to leave all the bookings alone. Personally I'm taking an easy come easy go attitude, although I still plan to fly as my flights haven't been screwed with that much, but it reflects badly on Alitalia and I would certainly think twice about throwing my regular priced business their way in the future.

BTW - anyone have any experience of their Magnifica class on the 767/777?

The so-called Magnifica Class is really nothing to compare with other c-class service across the Atlantic.
I never fly AZ but gave it a try on the MIA/MXP/MIA legs and it was really disappointing.
The seat is a regular old-style c-class seat and really nothing compared to lie-flat seats like those offered by AF, which is my term of comparison, and my favorite airline when I cross the Atlantic.
The only plus is the sort of First class service during meal time as they serve you plate by plate like in First class, but the food is below average and although they pretend to serve fresh pasta the flavor is ruined by being overcooked in the microwave oven.
Another oddity is the glass: more than a wine or water glass it is a miniature glass and you need to ask for 2-3 refills to compare a regular wine or water glass on AF or other airlines.
Also cabin attitude is typically Italian (and I'm Italian) so they pretend to be fashionable and friendly but they lack in providing a truly Magnifica class service.
My vote is really insufficient and AZ won't see me again in the future with the exception of the domestic run between LIN/FCO or BGY/FCO or LIN/NAP.

dude, LCA is a boring place indeed.
the airport was built there after the war of 74 as nicosia airport became part of the U.N neutral zone between greeks and turks. larnaca already had an airstrip used for emergency reasons and a whole airport was developed from this airstrip.

limassol (1h drive from LCA) and paphos (2h drive) are the most touristic places to be. they are nice and popular among UK tourists.
