URC is an intersting spot for PK to fly to..I wonder how they came up with that location...

I'm hoping that the Philippine authorities grant the MNL-NRT part, however, I'm curious to see when PK start LAX service and what 5th freedom rights they use......PVG would be interesting, but so would MAN.....

Seems like URC is getting a lot of extra service, with the BMed service as well from the UK.

MAN would make more sense as they have a minihub there now serving their USA network. It would be good to get a LAX service at MAN!

B|MED does not serve URC , though there were rumours about the airline looking to fly LHR-URC.

it may make more sense but its not easy as PIA has a very difficult time getting full 5th freedom rights on MAN-USA-MAN route. Out of their 5 weekly JFK flights routed via MAN these last few years, only two had 5th freedom rights privileges where as MAN-IAH had none.

China and USA have allowed Pakistani airlines to fly between China and U.S. West Coast cities 14 times a week maximum with 5th freedom rights. So if PIA wanted to start LAX via PVG next month, it already has full authority to do so + there is more money and yield especially to be made on 2 weekly B 777-200ER PVG-LAX-PVG flights than MAN-LAX-MAN!!!

Was this confirmed to start in June? Or was it just a rumor going around.

Now it has dropped down to 4 via MAN on the 743's/747's of PIA into JFK. The rest 3 flights are nonstop on 777LR.

Did they get that nonstop issue of flying between PAkistan -USA sorted out yet or do they have to make a tech stop.

still a rumour unfortunately, they actually don't have the planes, nor the pilots... Sad

"PIA trying to overcome shortage of pilots

KARACHI: The present management of the national flag carrier, Pakistan International Airline (PIA), is endeavoring to solve the shortage of pilot problem and both the management and the pilots will work together in the best interest of passengers and PIA.

In a statement on Friday, the airline said in the past week, a few flights have been delayed due to operational reasons. While PIA is managing to cope with these delays to cause the least inconvenience to its passengers, it would like to assure its passengers that it is continuously engaged to provide permanent solution to this problem.

In this context, it is pertinent to point out that in the last decade or so, planning for the induction of pilots periodically has been lagging behind and thus now a shortage of pilots exists. This has to be understood together with the fact that a newly inducted pilot has to fly the lowest equipment (turbo-prop) for a specific number of hours before he can be ready to fly the next higher equipment (Jets 737, A310, then wide-bodied aircrafts either 777 or 747) after going through conversion training of 3-4 months. Thus if an airplane higher in weight and complexity, like the recently bought Boeing 777- 200 ER and LR, a lack of qualified pilots exists, as is now the case. This puts a lot of pressure on the scheduling of cockpit crew."

Seems more logical a routing than via MAN, regarding MNL, Philippine Airlines have objected to PIA flying the NRT route.

I disagree....I think Pakistan-MAN-LAX would be a better profit maker....use either 777-300ER (once they get it) or a 777-200ER.....add some cargo and it will make some  dollarsign

It seems that way. I think PIA is trying to get MS old route MNL-NRT.

Now that PR has fortefied its position on the MNL-Japan route, I don't think it wants other players plying the already low yielding leisure route.

How much more will the rates drop?

If I were PIA, *I* would object to flying Pakistan/MNL/NRT. Is there a reason they really want to fly MNL/NRT or do Pakistanis like flying 1200 miles out of the way?

As I mentioned above your post, its because they want to fill the MS void.

With only PR and JL on the route it could be lucrative, but I doubt since this route is well served already by the both of them.

This route for PK will be a 5th freedom route by the way.
