Now there's an about face! Perhaps CO knows something we don't..perhaps about the future of DL and or NW...or maybe they just want to bang heads with AA on the international circuit. More news should be coming in the future months about this expansion.

I also wouldn't forget that combined with expansion, you do have normal goings of employees for a variety of personal and employment related reasons. With pensions going out, and declining or leveled out pay and benefits, people won't stay with an airline for life, but may move on to non-airline jobs. At least this way, CO will have the people they need when that time comes.

Have Co ordered any New aircraft lately ? Perhaps they will just work the existing fleet harder.

Aside from the 787s, there are two 772ERs on order for confirmed delivery next year, strong rumors that further 772ER orders were placed but not announced as the orders are subject to confirmation, CO is in the process of taking delivery of the ex-ATA 753s and again there are rumors that CO has some type of agreement to take the remaining 4 ex-ATA 753s just as soon as ATA gets its fleet situation worked out, and there have been recent 738 deliveries.

Further, there are continuing rumors that CO is looking to lease additional widebody aircraft.......but these rumors have been around forever with no result. The latest is that CO is trying to pick up two additonal 777s as soon as possible - but being that there are zero 777s available on the market, the topic is moot.

Good luck to CO - they do work hard and fly right.

The pilots union for Continental already has been holding welcome parties for newcomers, said union spokesman Jim Moody.

The more they have in the Union the faster CO will follow the other legacy carriers into BK. Lets face it, Unions don't help anyone anymore. Ever wondered why Southwest makes so much money?

In case you haven't noticed, Southwest pilots have been unionized since the beginning - SWAPA (Southwest Airlines Pilots Assn). BTW, it's not unions who take airlines down; it's incompetent and overpaid management.

Yes, our airline is outsoucing as much as possible. All catering, all ramp service and customer service abroad, heavy maintenance etc. If you don't work on an aircraft, you might get outsourced, and a local Swdish airline has all its cabin crew from an manpower company!

Perhaps. IIRC, there was a time the trend was for employees to be majority owner of the airlines, and IIRC in early 1990s American Airlines CEO had indicated that in the future most airlines would be employee owned. Is it true for any airline today and if not which airline has the highest employee ownership.

In theory an employee owned/managed airline should do better than the current structure of most airlines as there will be less friction between management and employees. Why hasn't this happened yet? I would appreciate if airline employees can comment on this.

Goldenshield is right. In fact if I'm not mistaken, I believe 85% of Southwest Airlines employees are unionized - encompassing EVERY non-management workgroup.

one of my friends who used to work for UA as a 737FO, and he told me that he had a call from UA asking for him to come back.

i would possibly see this comming anyway. This orginization that I work with has this person who she used to fly with ACA(with UA) that they know and she now works for CO as a 737 First officer.

Some of these people I know(2 actually who are flight Instructors) work for the Express Jet division as pilots in IAH. Mabye some more from there could try.

well good luck Continental! After the last year and a half I seem to think CO is the "Diamond in the Ruff" of the airline industry in the United States. I keep hearing good things about them, only if they hubbed here I would try them. But who knows how things will look 10 years from now..hell maybe even 5 years!

also a friend of mind attended and is now a F/A with CO! He trained in Houston but had to be based in Newark.

! Was there too much fat to begin with...?

IMHO, there was too much fat. For example, CO has eliminated nearly 25% of it's senior management. However, there have also been personnel reductions due to efficiency gains from technology. Several carriers have been able to reduce the staffing at reservation centers due to the growth in internet sales.

Quoting LAXDESI (Reply 3):
Are the current employees getting a lot of overtime?

From what I've observed and experienced, the answer is yes.

Quoting LAXDESI (Reply 3):

Again, yes, especially in maintenance, but also in reservation centers; don't forget DL's "res" center in India.

All F/A training at CO is done in Houston. Right now most of their expansion is at EWR so you have to be based there, but you can transfer to IAH eventually. Personally I think EWR is a much more exciting area with a lot more exciting and interesting things to see and do within a 100 mile radious.

That maybe true but if you're sitting on reserve making the monthly minimum, it's an awful expensive place to see and do things in. I also hear that there are some really exciting things to see and do in some of the crash pads that might involve 4 legged friends that hide in the walls.

They can't hire fast enough for the ramp in Houston. They need more people just to keep up with the pace.

Delta just found 1,000 managers they apparently feel they can funtion with out, according to USA Today, last week...where have they been? CAL is so much leaner, and has been kicking butt!

There are no slots for the 787 available, unless an airline wants to buy out another. That fuel savings will be approximately equal to the fuel hedge SWA has today...and SWA pilots now carry the bullseye as the highest paid airline pilots...

Maybe instead of speculating about CO's growth, it would be a novel idea to actually read and quote the article...

Quote:
Continental is hiring about 700 flight attendants this year to help staff the carrier's international expansion, and says it will need to add 350 pilots.

Additionally, Continental said it will need to hire 1,500 customer service (ramp) agents, 500 airport sales agents, 250 mechanics, 500 food services workers and 300 reservations sales agents.

The new Houston-based employees that will be needed include about 100 professional and clerical employees, and about 500 entry-level agents.

A lot of this is volume driven based on staffing forecasts and other (primarily) hub staffing for ramp and ATO agents.

Also, things like Res and food service have taken on more non-CO work on contracts and such, so that's part of that growth.

Yeah that's why CO's unions (with the exception of the F/A's) agreed to paycuts on the first go around. The F/A's agreed to cuts on the second go around.

I thought the same thing. CO's unions are relatively peaceful, and it's a testament to the management of the company that all but one work group passed wage cuts on the first try, and the F/A's were able to do it on the second try. No strike talk, no work slowdowns - nothing! Can't exactly say that the other carriers have had the same employee peace within their companies...

"CO has some of the the highest aircraft utilation numbers in the industry. Its going to be very hard for CO to work the fleet any harder."

The widebodies and the 757's have incredible utilization rates - up around 14 hours a day, but the smaller 737's spend a leisurely 7 to 8 hours a day at work. They might want to think about swapping a few of the RJ's off the more heavily traveled routes and putting more miles on the 737's.
