UK To CHC: Please Help Find Cheaper Fares

Sun Apr 09, 2006 4:19 am

Hi there,

A friend is wishing to travel from the UK - ideally from MAN then wherever else - to CHC leaving about the 16th December (there's some flexibility) and returning to the UK sometime at the end of January. The lowest fare we've so far found is between £1,100 and £1,200 all-in - which is about the same as to AKL - with EK and, from LHR, NZ and EK. Can you find anything cheaper? I don't think there's much chance, considering the outbound flight will be around the Christmas period, but hey.

Hi,
You can try booking around NOV or even October. Consider using European or even US travel sites www.opodo.de (sure its in german, but the data input matris is the same- TO, FROM, DATE, #pax, ETC) or travelocity.com (flexable search possible) or sidestep.com. I'm sure the standard US sites have been tried already. I tend to find some slight price breaks on US sites because of the weak USD, and even for the UK there is a slightly weak EUR. You acn even try some Australian travel companies. RTW tickets from LH (for one example) is about 100 GBP cheaper through an Australian consolidator than when purchased through a UK consolidator (sorry I cant remember the web address).
Even the taxes are computed differently in different countries. LH 9182 is UA 902 on a UA aircraft (IAD-MUC) taxes charged by UA is about 80 USD, Taxes charged by LH is nearly double. Good Luck!

although not out of MAN or into CHC NZs new AKL-HKG-LHR service will double their capacity between New Zealand and the UK - I would assume that at some point they are going to have to make an effort to sell that extra capacity ( that is not likely to include Dec-Jan though - the double effect of Kiwis going home for Xmas and Brits escaping the winter make that a nightmare to get cheap seats at the best of times ) . If your friend is dead set on Dec-Jan then my advice is to buy sooner rather than later ... don't wait hoping that specials will come out covering that period 'cos barring another war / another foot and mouth epidemic etc etc etc the prices will only get higher as capacity fills up . If your friend is able to be a bit more flexible and can look earlier , or later then it may be worth holding off a bit longer

It looks like the cheapest fares end Dec 11th (~£900 all in) on LH/SQ via SIN. If he has to depart after that date, personally, I'd go with a cheap RTW ticket.

Edit: The reason I'd go with a RTW ticket is that Jan 29 is the Chinese New Year in 2007, and it might be easier to continue to fly eastbound, than return via Asia at the end of January.

You could go on CX, NZ, EK, QF, BA, SQ or KE *I think they fly to CHC seasonally.* If you go to each of their websites you'll be bound to find a cheaper airfare sooner or later.

CX don't fly to CHC and it would be best to fly on the same airline all the way to CHC instead of flying on two different airlines, so cancel CX as an option. One airline is cheaper unless its a code-share

Hi James

I was quoted £842.62 by http://www.globalholidays.co.uk/scheduled-flights.htm flying VS from LHR/LAX and NZ from LAX/AKL. You would then have to add the cost of a domestic flight from AKL to CHC that would probably add another £200plus, and the LHR/LAX section is on Branson's airline.

Did not Thomsonfly announce that they were doing charters to Australia and New Zealand in the winter months. Seem to recall fares of £450 were quoted but cannot find any further details?

That would be a return trip domestic and it would actually be more like £140 return if you book thru the .co.nz porthole... I've heard its more expensive thru the .co.uk porthole.
also in winter the LAX-CHC flights should be back up and running possibly 3x weekly with 772ERs...

I had a look on that site and if you leave on the 10th or 13th of Dec the price is also £842.62 on NZ19/NZ18 to CHC rather than via AKL. Leaving on the 17th of Dec was £1064.84 (getting close to Christmas).

I've done this trip a couple of times - last year departing on the 24th Dec I paid £940 on EK. The year before I paid £820 on SQ. A similar trip on EK this year would cost ~ £1150. Prices have increased quite a lot!

Try "Trailfinders" or "STA", both have an office in Manchester and have contracted (discounted) fares with all of the major airlines.

Airfares generally go up in price around 10th December, some earlier, some later. Your outbound date will determine the price of the ticket so you can make a huge saving if they can leave a little earlier.

Taxes have increased heavily due to security and fuel prices and these will be whacked ontop of any cheap airfare that you find, making the ticket seem much more expensive.

£1000 INCLUDING taxes AND in peak season sounds like an alright deal i'm afraid!

Unfortunately its NZ's peak season then nov-dec for tourism and also with it being right over the Christmas period i would book as soon as possible because it will only get more expensive as seats fill up quick at that time with New Zealanders returning home for christmas ..Godd luck but i doubt you will find any really cheap seats over that period ..Sorry

Korean Airlines (KE) often have the best deals from the UK end, but you may have to o/n in Seoul before the connecting leg.
