United's website shows that UA221 was an A319 bound for LAX. It departed on time, but is currently inflight and 4 hours late because of "aircraft servicing".
|Quoting Andoo (Thread starter):
United flight 221 caught fire on takeoff roll this afternoon at IAD. The a/c aborted take off and evacuated on the runway. The airport was shut down for an hour or so while they worked to clean up the runway. Not too sure what runway they were using, I would think the 19's...but again, not sure. And I dont know the exact a/c type, just that it was an Airbus. Many diversions and disrupted flights. (We were lucky enough to get a United 767 at RIC)

Pax were evacuated (via the slides)
|Quoting MarkHKG (Reply 8):|
RDUDDJI, do you know if anyone evacuated using the right over-wing slide? I'm always worried that the passengers at the "self-help" exits won't open them during an evacuation...
|Quoting MarkHKG (Reply 10):|
Yes, the B757 and 767 overwing exits also have that "fence", albeit not bright orange.
