Boeing Commercial Vs. Boeing Military

Mon Apr 10, 2006 2:32 pm

Does anyone know how Boeing's profits breakdown in terms of commerical sales vs. military sales? I'd imagine the company does a heck of a lot more work for the military than it does for the commercial aviation world (although a lot of the military contracts might be classified so we civilians would never know about them). Any comments...?

Well, with the USA's engagements in Afghanistan and Iraq, and now the winds over Iran, I'd say Boeing's military sales are doing pretty good. I think one of their biggest military contracts that is now being constantly renewed is for the JDAM smart bomb. I think the Navy is still taking deliveries of the Super Hornet, and to my knowledge, the V-22 project/production is still ongoing. We can't forget the C-17 Globemaster III either, one of my personal favorites!! I think Boeing has got a production schedule on those things until like 2008 or something.......but don't quote me on that.

I have no idea on the actual breakdown or comparison of profits between the military or commercial sales though. If I had to take a complete guess, I'd imagine that commercial is worth more. A good portion of Boeing's military sales come from McDonnell Douglas designs. The C-17 and the F/A-18 are most notable for that. If that means anything in itself, it would mean that Boeing focuses more on commercial markets, and most of their military markets came from the takeover of McDonnell Douglas.

Well, the thread title asks for this answer:

I think Boeing Military would kick the shit out of Boeing Commercial in any war. I mean, it would be no contest.

True, but Boeing Commercial would be more economical so at least they don't have as much to lose.
