Update On LAS Expansion

They have a channel out here dedicated to all different types of things, including an hour on a show called "Flight Path" that is pretty cool. Some interesting info from that show as well as info I have gathered posted here:



  • 4th wing to break ground this summer on the D gates which will add nine more gates
  • Terminal 3 expected to break ground late this year
  • New passenger bridge connecting the B and C gates to be finished by early '07
  • New Ivanpah Airport in final stages of design

  • Southwest will have 223 daily departures this summer which again tops the list for the largest WN station, and at least 10 new round-trip flights this year expected. Southwest is obviously the largest passenger carrier in Las Vegas as well as the most flights.

  • Allegiant currently serving about 40 destinations from LAS, and expects to serve nearly 80 by the end of 2008. Allegiant predicts about 130 cities can support Allegiants' big jets.

  • America West/US Airways expected to continue slow growth at LAS. They currently have 67 destinations, which is more than Southwest

  • Passenger growth expected to be at around 6-7% this year

  • About 600,000 operations last year, with about 10% more expected this year than last

    Also worth mentioning:

  • VGT (North Las Vegas Airport) currently the second busiest airport in the state, ahead of RNO.

  • VGT currently home to about 675 GA aircraft, with parking areas being constructed for about 100 planes currently on the waiting list.

  • Two new taxiways recently constructed at VGT

  • HND (Henderson) Now has parallel runways, a new tower, and a new terminal.

    Definitely a lot of growth going on here in all areas. The only thing that concerns me is very few people are going to want to use the new Ivanpah airport, as Mc Carran is literally a mile from the Strip compared to about 30 with the new airport.

WesternA319...Unfortunately, any shooting from this side may result in poor light as you will be facing South. Only early morning shooting will be possible.

Check out the parking lot on the North side of Sunset Rd., between Spencer and Paradise Roads, get a great view of the main runways (25R/7L and 25L/7R) for take-offs and landings. Also can listen to ATC on 95.9 FM when in the general area.

For the head-on shots off of the above mentioned runways, there is a little "parking area" on the East side of Las Vegas Blvd., just South of the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign. Not too many good spots for the 1's/19's runways that I can think of off the top of my head.

If you are staying on the "Strip" and want a good view of the airport, check out the Tropicana South Tower, request a room facing south/east and you'll be looking right down on the airport.

Really good to hear that LAS is doing so well. What's this Ivanpah airport? This is the first I've heard of it and now my interest is piqued...

I have no idea...I've yet to visit that illustrious, shining paragon of American capitalism and ingenuity. I *am* putting an honest effort into finding the time, friends, and money (or friends with money, lol) this summer to pull a jaunt off. Either that or it's a weekend in AC...or nothing at all, lol.

Analysis shows that this site is the only viable location in Southern Nevada that meets the Department's suitability criteria of available airspace, good terrain and topography, no surrounding incompatible land uses, and excellent access to existing surface transportation including a major interstate highway and the Union Pacific Railroad.

Before the airport can be developed, however, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) must be prepared. The United States Department of the Interior - Bureau of Land Management and the Federal Aviation Administration are the Joint Lead Federal Agencies tasked with preparing the EIS. In 2005, the FAA and BLM selected Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. (VHB) to assist them in preparing the EIS. In upcoming months, the FAA and BLM will create an EIS website. A link to that website will be provided here as soon as it is available.

On November 16, 2005, the Clark County Department of Aviation hosted an informal Public Open House to provide basic information regarding the proposed airport and the EIS process. Department of Aviation staff, FAA and BLM staff attended the meeting to answer questions.

Ivanpah looks like it's got 8 widebody gates, in addition to 36 others. How many gates does LAS have?
It also appears that if the airport ever reaches capacity, two more concourses will be built ATL-style, with underground moving walkways connecting them.
Does anybody know the passenger/flight cap on the new airport?

The new airport looks fantastic, and in 20 years, the distance won't matter so much to Greater Vegas, because by then, the suburbs will probably be next to it!  Wink

LAS has like 85 or so gates (not including T2).

The expansion of LAS is as follows: NW wing of D Concourse, Terminal 3. After that, no more room at LAS. They have to go IVP. They're really runway constricted. There is a big fight now as to whether or not to let planes turn right after takeoff and go over the heavily populated and affluent suburb of Summerlin (which is where I live). Sites like http://www.stoptherightturn.com/ are trying to mobilize residents against the FAA to leave the patterns as they are. The FAA says that the right turn would allow more operations than the left turn does. The problem is that the FAA isnt accountable to anyone on the local level. The City of Las Vegas came out opposed to it, but they have no authority here.

IVP's capacity would probably max out at 30M pax/yr. It might be possible to get more with a third parallel runway and get more capacity out of the airport (two are supposed to be built initially last I checked).

If you think things are bad for LAS now, the projections shown by Randy Walker (head of Clark Country DOA) show that they're behind the 8-ball the next 10 years. When these hyper-resorts open (the first is Project CityCenter - 5000 hotel rooms plus condos/timeshares, shopping, etc) traffic is expected to jump tremendously. They put 450,000 people through each gate in 2005. From what he said the industry average is 400,000. In order to meet conservative projections, they'll be putting 500,000 people through each gate throughout the year down the road (2009-2013 or until T3 opens).

Probably a lot less than 10, 15, or 20 years ago.

My point is, could some of this congestion that LAS is forecasted to experience, be alleviated somewhat by the use of larger aircraft?

223 737s a day? Whoa, that's a ton!, not including everyone elses narrow body lawn darts mucking things up.
But unfortunately, a widebody in domestic US service is about as rare as what, an Elvis sighting on Tropicana Blvd? No wait, that's not right....Just saw him yesterday.....anyway, nevermind.

Indeed, if LAS saw more 767s, 777s, etc, there would be more pax per airfield operation, and would increase the theoretical capacity of the airport. In fact, about 10 years ago it was said often that the total pax capacity of LAS was 60M per year, this number is now stated as 53M pax/yr. This was before WN expanded and took the entire C concourse. Shuttling in about 100 people on 737 on WN or an 320 with US/HP flight is less efficient than 300+ people on a DL 764 (I flew back home from ATL on one last year).

But then again, its easy to fill up a 737, and as long as frequency is more important than airfield capacity, it'll stay that way.

Why would they not allow for more maximum capcity than 30 mil? I can understand building up the size of the airport as demand needed it - but you're building a brand new airport out in the middle of nowhere with unlimited land space, why not make a design that allows for plenty of future terminals to be build and space for extra runways when needed? That's why I was so dissapointed in AUS Bergstrom - sure it's a nice modern facility that's perfect for the city's current size, but it was built as if AUS will never need any more gates, and Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in America with a strong technology industry core to it.

I think I'm going to start www.savetherightturn.com. Most flights don't even reach Snobberlin after making the right turn. If I remember correctly from the past (before they were forced into the left turns off 25), eastbound flights would have turned east right over about Desert Inn Road and the planes wouldn't go any further west than about Rainbow Drive. That doesn't come close to being over Summerlin - in fact the only flights that would go over Summerlin are those to RNO, SEA, PDX, GEG, YVR, and ANC, and usually those would be at about 10,000 feet by the time they reach that area and not really a noise issue at all. If Snobberlin really thinks that aircraft turning right off 25 are going to affect their lives, they need to get their heads out of their asses.

You know I get dissapointed when people hear about Cheetah's, Spearmint Rhino, and Crazy Girls Too and they think these are the premier clubs in Vegas, when in fact they are crap. Spearmint Rhino is too dark (darker than most clubs - I do want to see a few things), overcrowded, impossible to get a drink (if you're even willing to pay $7/beer), and the girls are bitches. I always recommend to visitors the Deja Vu - it's convenient to the strip, has some of the hottest women of any club, as well some of the friendliest girls. In fact, as a rule, I refuse to go to any of the topless clubs in Vegas - they suck. Totally nude joints are the way to go in Vegas.

Going back to viewing spots for a second...

A good place to view traffic for 01/19 operations is in the parking lot of the sports complex right on the corner of Sunset and LV Blvd. It's behind the golf course right there.

There's no radio freq. to turn to, but if you have a scanner, you can pick up the tower on 118.75.

To add to that, the north end of those runways provides the same spotting capacity. Ever since the driving range went out of business, the area across Tropicana Rd has been a deserted lot and you probably wouldn't have to deal with as many tresspassing threats spotting from over there. Perimeter fence is the same height on each end of that runway. Besides, the 19s are used much more than the 1s.

I know this is a little off topic - but does anyone have an explanation for the LAS-RNO market? On HP, it seems like RNO will go through stretches will nobody will want to go, and then you'll have a week where you can't find a seat and could easily fill up an A330. Does WN experience the same trends on their flights? Are there other city pairs that share such traffic irregularity?

The terrain around the airport is the limited factor as to adding more parallel runways. At most there will be 3 parallel runways, two on one side of the airport and one on the other.
