"Wheels up Palmdale"
Oh, so that's what they are calling it this time. Having lived in the Antelope Valley for ten years all this is nothing new. Promises. Promises. Big hoo hah announcement about how important PMD
is blah, blah, blah... The PR
campaign phrase then was, "Palmdale Airport Takes-Off!"
From my door in Lancaster to the long term lot at LAX
was 72 miles. An often frustrating 72 miles, so I tried the flying a number of times. The best effort out there in my time was not LAX
service, but America West service to LAS
on nice Dash 8 equipment meant no LAX
hassle what so ever. You were into the HP
system and onto your final destination. No LAX
craziness, especially the third world United Express terminal service. You couldn't beat America West, but they couldn't make money on it I guess. Nor could UA
service. For most Antelope Valley folks, the 72 mile drive was also better than that added ticket charge on the LAX
or the Vegas flight.
Another problem is that the AV
folks are the ugly step-children of LA
County. Despite it's large population, out there in the hinterlands of the desert, County folks forget about them unless there is a high profile murder or a PR
campaign at PMD
. And I have my doubts you will ever get it in the heads of other LA
county folk to drive out there for a flight. "Where's Palmdale? Oh? Oh, that's where we get gas on the way to Vegas."
has a nice little terminal, for three airlines as I recall. It reminds you of the good old days. A simple terminal, that is quiet and has FREE parking. You walk out to the aircraft and go up the stairs. I liked it. And I hope they can get service back. Maybe US to PHX
is the way to try again. Good Luck to them. But don't trust what any LA
politician says about it.
