Inflight Announcements In Flights To India

Thu Apr 13, 2006 2:03 am

I was wondering about this.
I have flown IA from TRV to BOM and also TRV-SHJ. The announcements are in Hindi and English.
But I was pleasntly surprised in my KU flight KWI-TRV, the announcements were in English, Arabic and Malayalam, no Hindi.
So, funny an Indian airline wouldn't use Malayalam while coming to Kerala but a foreign Airline uses malayalam.

As I have limited experience in flying different airlines to India, I was wondering what languages do diiferent airlines use when coming to India.
Eg. BA or AA to Chennai, flights to calcutta, Hyderabad etc.
Do the KL, AZ flights use Hindi when going to BOM, DEL etc.

Just curious. Please give your inputs.

Thanks

Interesting thought....however, need to consider that there are sooooooo many languages in India, it would be opening a Pandora's box, because each State would be clamouring for announcements in their local langauge then....

It's really fine for a foreign airline like KU, who fly to only certain Indian cities and cater to a specific segment (in this case, Keralite workers travelling to and from the Gulf to India)....but for IC or any other domestic carrier, may not be so easy to do this....

And at the end of the day, between English and Hindi, almost 75% of the flying population in India would understand atleast one of the announcements... smile

When I flew SQ to BLR, when we were boarding they played one recorded announcement in Tamil (not in Kannada), but in-flight and upon landing they only did announcements in English. When I flew MH from BLR-KUL, announcements were in English, Hindi and Malay. It probably is impractical to have announcements in all the regional languages, and my guess is most if not all passengers on the Bangalore flight could understand at least broken English.

I think NW uses Hindi to BOM from AMS. The same language when we used to fly to DEL.

Sorry about the short form for Indian Airlines, it should be read as IC and not IA. My bad.

Probably because Tamil is one of the official languages of Singapore.

As for the KU flight to TRV, I was mentioning, All crew except the Arab captain were malayalis( same for the return leg also). This is not common in any other airline, not even an Indian airline, a good marketing strategy I guess. This crew were much more professional than the non-Indian crew I saw on the LHR-KWI KU flight.
I don't know about the crew they use on EK, QR etc. on their flights to Kerala.

In the Air Canada flight from YYZ to LHR, they make announcements in English and French, eventhough almost all pax aboard would understand English. The use of French is more political(AC has to be bilingual) than for communication as it is a flight from an English speaking Province to an English country.
I wonder if BA flying to YYZ does the same.

Similarly all Indian carriers especially AI, IC would be bilingual (English and Hindi). KU has the convenience of skipping Hindi and using Malayalam.

It would be interesting to get a list of Airlines with the languages of announcments.

Could be although I've flown SQ to DEL and announcements are in English/Hindi.

BA flights to Mumbai have cabin crew who speak Gujarati, with announcements in Gujarati.

The flight ti Chennai had announcements in Tamil and Flight to bangalore has announcements in Kannada.

BTW never expect IC or AI to use regional languages. The hindi Chauvinists would never let that happen

India speaks close to 20 different languages, its impossible to make very one happy. Local airlines stick to national = Hindi, intl= English.

Cathay used to do this to all their sectors, announcements in the langaue of destination and now they dont even speak good english.

I know that this is a litte off... but on a recent flight from Houston to Mexico City, they made announcements in English, Spanish, and French. This was on Continental Airlines. This was also done on domestic Avianca flight recently from Bogotá to Cartagena.

Not defnding the language - but it would get fairly confusing on some sectors - making announcements in four languages - as English and Hindi would be the most common langauges spoken, its the easiest usually. Plus adding another language would make the safety drill go on and on (ugh!). But with LCC's coming up, it might be prudent to do English and another language - but that is fraught with politics - on a flight to Belgaum what would you speak Kannada or Marathi? (Read up the politics of Belgaum to understand my point).
On international flights - usually it is three languages - English, Hindi and the languages of the nation the carrier is from.
However, on the AF flight I took once DEL-CDG the in-flight safety video was only English and French. LH on DEL-FRA had English, Hindi and German; SQ on DEL-SIN and BOM-SIN had English and Hindi but TG on DEL-BKK only had English and Thai. I don't think international carriers have to have an Indian language.

Hey guys,

As a flight attendant for Qantas airways we fly to BOM.

We only make announcements in English throughout the entire flight. The safety demo will have dual language hindi/English.

In regards to other routings...

Say we are going from SYD-HKG our langauge badges on this route is Mandarin and Cantonese only. This means we have to have these speakers onboard the aircraft. Now we usually have more speakers of other languages, thus we can check the manafest and their could be a large number of italian tourists thus we will make italian announcements. Hope this explains it abit more.

Another example is...

I was operating a flight from SYDHNL and we had ALOT of korean passports at the door, they were a tourist group going to HNL on holiday. Im a Korean speaker so i made announcements in Korean for the entire flight. So English/Spanish/Korean were made for this flight. Its all about improvising!

All the best

I get your point but unlike most other countries India does not have one homegenised culture or language. Most flyers would tend to understand either English or Hindi but one it is fairly complicated.

We do have - what 20? official languages - and we cringe from calling English the de facto official language, even though it is.

So, true.
Some airlines(eg. KU) demos are video recordings,so a regional language recording/dubbing wouldn't be a problem. Oops, i forgot IC doesn't have any video screens.
Any progress in the IFE of IC yet?

Me too!

EK is probably the most regional language friendly airline. It has the announcements and also the cabin lables (Seat, Galley, Toilet) in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Now with services to CCU (and shortly to BLR), it will be interesting to see what they will do with additional two languages of Bengali and Kannada.

Actually Delta to Chennai was in English, Tamil and Hindi. On my 9W flight from MAA to COK only English was used inflight. On Sahara from MAA to BLR it was English and Hindi.

Have on several occasions while flying in to Kerala from the middle east been handed the entry forms and passports by people gesturing for me to fill them out. If you ponder the real reason these announcements are made, most importantly for safety, you would argue for as many languages as possible or argue for a sign language only delivery which would be understood by all.

If airlines in India start inflight announcements in regional languages, it's gonna be crazy situation. I flew down from BOM to BLR on Spice Jet flight SG 526. The route is BOM-BLR-MAA. The announcements would have to be in English, Hindi, Marathi, Kannada and Tamil.
An airplane might disappoint any pilot but it'll never surprise a good one.

Hey guys, here are a few of my experiences of flying into DEL

From LHR (VS): They made tghe announcements in English and Hindi. They had crew who was indian who made the announcements on their own. No recording.

From HJG (CX): Similarly they had some indian crew who made the announcements in Chinese, Engligh and Hindi.

From SIN (SQ): They had the announcements in Mandarin, English and Hindi. They were however all recorded. No Indian crew.
I want every single airport and airplane in India to be on A.net!

How bout airlines flying to Hyderabad? Are their announcements made in Telugu? I know SQ flies in to Hyderabad and so does Air Lanka, Emirates etc. Wonder if they announce in Telugu. So far I have only flown IC form DXB-HYD and no telugu there!!

Hey Guys,

Just my views on this topic. Firstly, as someone mentioned above there are 20 odd languages and 600 odd dialects spoken in India. And it is quite improbable for an airline to cover all the languages of a particular destination. Furthermore, if you were to fly BOM-DEL you'd probably have passengers from all parts of India!!! So, IC and AI stick to Hindi and English, of which Hindi is the official language and English the defacto official.

However in flights from the Gulf to Kerala/TN it makes no sense at all to usew Hindi as hardly anyone from those states converse in Hindi and Gulf-Kerala flights are mostly full of people from S. India. It would then make sense to use regional languages as quite a few of the gulf carriers do.

Cheers
